Funny. Me and one of my friends are having the same argument on facebook also. I say Favre. Cal Ripken never got hit by Warren Sapp repeatedly and he switched positions. Favre was always a starting qb.

I've heard some of the ESPN guys (Mike and Mike?) say that they thought Favre's streak is more impressive.

 

I've gotta go with Ripken. Favre is 15 games ahead of Jim Marshall (about 5%); while Ripken is 502 ahead of Gehrig (about 23%).

Here's what makes Ripken's streak even more impressive. The guy in third place had 1,307 consecutive games. Ripken has more than twice as many as the guy in third place.

MLB's rule 10.23©, defining consecutive game streaks, is as follows: "A consecutive game playing streak shall be extended if the player plays one half inning on defense, or if he completes a time at bat by reaching base or being put out. A pinch running appearance only shall not extend the streak. If a player is ejected from a game by an umpire before he can comply with the requirements of this rule, his streak shall continue."[14] This peculiar rule means that a pinch-runner can come into a game, steal a base, get caught stealing, and even score a run, but still will not be credited with a (consecutive) game played if he does not stay in the game afterward. Similarly, a player can take the field and contribute to the game in many ways—field a ball in play, make a putout, make an assist, commit an error—but is not credited with a (consecutive) game played if he does not play an entire half inning.

Not sayin it didn't count. Just sayin to me the streak is a little less impressive if this was something he did a lot. I don't think Favre ever came in for just a play or two to keep his streak alive.

There are too many games to count games, you have to look at it in terms of years IMO. 16 years for Cal and 18 years for Brett. Brett, IMO, is the more impressive. Nothing at all vs. Cal but it's Brett.

Favre's streak is impressive because of the position he plays in the sport he plays. On top of that, he is a guy who plays with reckless abandon and always was/is putting his body on the line. A lot of those starts he made were in game most starting qb's throughout the league would miss.

 

Ripkens streak is impressive due to the grind it out nature of baseball. Constantly on the road, traveling, playing and usually on back to back days, it is very easy to take a day off here and there. The fact he was in the lineup consecutively that many times was very telling of Ripkens demeanor and character.

 

 

 

Both outstanding achievements in their own right, I just think its hard to compare the two being the difficulty of both streaks but in contrasting ways.

I think it does matter that Ripken made bogus appearances in games to keep the streak alive. Favre never started a game, played a series and left. Not saying Ripken's streak is illegal, it isn't and is impressive, but Favre's is way more impressive, IMO. Ripken could play a whole game and not do much physically. Favre's body and well being was on the line every play.

Easily Cal's.

Easily Favre's. I'd like to see Cal get hit by Cecil Fielder 5-10 times a game and see if he comes out in a week for more. For 18 straight years. Doubtful.

I'm going with Cal's. People are underestimating the daily grind of the baseball season. Just because they aren't getting tackled doesn't mean their bodies aren't exhausted. And even if Favre was sacked a couple times a game it's pretty rare for a quarterback to take a full speed, direct angle hit like he did last week and like most other positions endure.

For me, the fact that Favre isn't starting it tells me that he is truly hurt pretty bad. When Ripken's streak ended, it meant that his charity at-bats were over.

Far and away Cal. Cal didn't stick around years after he should've hung um up solely to keep the streak alive, like Favre has.
