I think both records are equally impressive, but I personally would give the nod to Cal. For the simple fact that I could conceivably see Brett's record fall, but there is no way in Hades I can conceivably see Cal's fall.

 

Only 1 MLB player played in every game in 2008. The game of football is individually more brutal. But the baseball season is more grueling.

One of the biggest reasons people are giving it to Cal is because of the numbers of games in a season. How many people go to work 6 days a week for 8 hours for the majority of the year (50 or so weeks)? Cal did it for 162 games and only 2-3 hours. Also does his streak include playoff games? I believe I heard this morning on Mike and Mike that Farve's 297 does not include playoff games. If you include playoff games it is mid 300s.

Ripken played in about 98% of the innings during the streak. Also, if you get hurt or sick in baseball, you only have one day to get better. You have a week in football and sometimes two.

Still doesn't change the fact that 1 AB kept his streak alive. Favre could have very easily dressed last night and ran one play. He didn't. Ripken did.

Ripken's streak was more mentally grinding. Favre's streak was a lot more physically grinding. Choose your poison.

In fairness I am bias because of my dislike of the Cal Ripken Jr. love affair. He was a Hall of Fame caliber player, no doubt. But because of his streak, he was somehow catapulted to all time great status as evident by his HOF vote total. Had he missed one game right in the middle, no person would think near as much of a Ripken Jr. I have also always thought many people give to much credit for streaks when in reality all they are doing is there everyday job they are paid millions to do. We revere Ripken, et al. for going to work. Admirable, sure.
