December 2, 201015 yr On Monday the NCAA quietly ruled Cam Newton ineligible. A day later the NCAA reinstated Newton citing the fact Cecil Newton - Cam's father - was the violator of rules. For punishment, Cecil's contact with the University of Auburn has been taken away (ouch, that is a stiff punishment!). Few things here. 1) Does this point out a serious loophole? "Oh, my child had nothing to do with this, he or she should be eligible." 2) I still do not see this ending well for Auburn on down the road. May be months or a year or two away before the hammer falls, but I cannot get behind the player was completely oblivious defense. Whether that is the case or not, it sets a poor precedent without some very conclusive evidence.
December 2, 201015 yr WOW! This doesn't look right at all! This will open up a huge can of worms in all sports now! So if I am representing a player either as a parent, coach, or other, I will be able to shop him around to schools for a price and just tell the player that if anything ever happens just deny you know anything about it? Hmmm, Yeah, I can see this working out well.

December 2, 201015 yr I'm generally against Congressional inquiries into sports, but I'm all for one into the NCAA. They're a de facto monopoly on college sports, they make huge money, and there is zero consistency with the rules they make or how they apply them.

Also they only exsist because the schools allow them to. Its not like the NCAA owns college sports. If the member schools don't like the decisions there is an easy fix.

And I completely agree with walking away from the NCAA and starting over, though I acknowledge that's a pipe-dream.

An interesting question, all Newton talked about during his recruitment was how he liked Mullen and wanted to play for him at Mississippi State... Somebody had to be in his ear to change to Auburn.
