Someone who doesn't run his mouth all the time.

Someone who just says what happens and does not try to be part of the game.

Holmes has a good one. So does Holy Cross. Dixie has a good one. Someone to give the information without going overboard. Get the name's pronounced correctly.

Someone who WORKS at it, as opposes to thinking that they are just fine the way that they are. He/she needs to show impartiality to the game and make it exciting when he/she announces. He/she needs to pronounce words (not just names) correctly (it is a possession ARROW, not a possession ERA) and understand the flow of the game. It should be natural. Some people can do this well and some just make me cringe. I would recommend that practiced announcers approach someone that they trust will be truthful to you and say, "Ok, what do I pronounce wrong or what do I do as an announcer that is annoying?" and be prepared to work on those things.

 

He/she should also take the initiative to ask the opposing team's book keeper for help with the lineup, including pronounciations of last names, including the coaches. He/she also needs to understand that his/her position is the LEAST important at the scorers' table. He/she is not an official of the game.

 

As you can tell, I've worked with many a PA announcer in my day and I have had the privelege of working with the best (had two former young men still in HS that were fantastic...unfortuately both graduated and moved on to college ) and have also had some that were less than stellar. Overall, I have been pleased with the ones at my school, though I do feel that some athletic directors should take this position more seriously and seek out or develop someone to do this very important job.

 

Lastly, as a volunteer, announcers are to be thanked and NOT yelled at by unhappy fans. If a kid on your team gets his name mispronouned, how about just going to the table at a break and letting the announcer know, instead of yelling at him?

Sort of like Chris Berman. I remember when I attended Morehead I would take in some Rowan County games. It never failed that Steve Trivett from Rowan would always hit a three from the local BP station. I know I'm bias but I think Tim Moore (SK) does a solid job. Nothing over the top, just plain solid and I guess that is what I admire the most.
