November 27, 201015 yr Vizio makes a nice tv. Sony's obviously are real name-brand, but I think they have really slacked off recently in their products. Plasma looks the best IMO. My mother had to take back 4 vizio's. The customer service guy said they take back almost as many as they sell.
November 27, 201015 yr Any opinions on Panasonic plasmas? They have a 46" 1080p on their website for $517 until Nov 30th. We have two plasmas - one Panasonic and one Samsung. I like them both, but we are actually having a small problem with the Panasonic. The sound keeps going out every so often for about 2 seconds at a time. Contacted the customer service and they sent me some ungodly questionaire that I have to fill out before they'll pay for a technician to come out. We love the picture on it and got a good deal on it also (not quite as good as yours, but it was a year ago), but the sound issue is becoming annoying. I like our plasmas much better than our LCD's.
November 27, 201015 yr Yes she bought a LG 42" 1080p LCD. it looks good and she got it for $399 Awesome price, TVs are a good deal these days. I paid over $2,000 for a 62 inch DLP only five years ago.
November 27, 201015 yr Personal preference, I guess. For me, it's not even close. I like plasmas much more. They have improved them quite a bit in the past few years. I'm currently watching Avatar on my LCD, and I've never seen a Plasma tat looks this good. I don't have a problem with plasma's...I just don't feel like the picture is as good as what I'm seeing right now.
November 27, 201015 yr Personally I think Samsung has the best picture for the buck. Samsung and Sony are two of the top brands IMO.
November 27, 201015 yr Went through this fairly recently & studied thoroughly. From an LCD perspective, Sony & Samsung are your clear leaders of the pack. LED is better, but also more expensive. If you're going to buy an LCD, I recommend a 120Hz over the 60 Hz, assuming you'll be watching a lot of sports. Again, you'll pay a bit more for it, but it's worth it if you can foot the bill. The TV we purchased, which I am very happy with, is a Sony 46-inch, 60 Hz, 1080p. The sales paper I saw today has that at Wal-Mart for $700. I would go w/ that same TV but the 120Hz & you'll be very satisfied. Guessing that would cost around $850-$900. Couldn't agree more about the 120HZ. Best buy has a deal for a 46" Samsung LCD 120 HZ for $797. It was a deal they offered before black friday and probably after as well. I bought the TV and it's a very very good TV.
November 27, 201015 yr My mother had to take back 4 vizio's. The customer service guy said they take back almost as many as they sell. Vizio had cut itself a nice niche in the market a few years ago as offering a fairly decent quality TV at a cheap price. Now there are many brands that offer the same size TV at Vizio's price, but offer better quality. Vizio doesn't really stand out anymore as being an especially high quality TV nor especially cheap compared to others.
November 27, 201015 yr Congrats on the buy Admiral I'm sure he'll be pleased. Funny I went with my friend when he bought his 42 inch LG 720 60hz tv about 2 1/2 years ago for about $1300 or so. I bought my 52 inch Phillips 1080p 120hz tv for about $1200 last February. Now you can get the same thing as what I bought for around $900 maybe $800. The only thing to really keep in mind when purchasing a tv like this is what is the next technology they're talking about, and how long til it comes out. In addition can your cable, dvd, game player even support such a high resolution feed because very few can right now and that type of technology doesn't develop over months but typically years(see how long it took for channels to broadcast in HD).
November 27, 201015 yr Author Yes she bought a LG 42" 1080p LCD. it looks good and she got it for $399 that price was incorrect she paid $498 for the TV. This strep throat I have must be blocking my ears.
November 28, 201015 yr Couldn't agree more about the 120HZ. Best buy has a deal for a 46" Samsung LCD 120 HZ for $797. It was a deal they offered before black friday and probably after as well. I bought the TV and it's a very very good TV. Sam's has the same deal. Definitely a good price. This one has made my short list.

I guess I shouldn't be looking at these adds so late at night. I had it all wrong. It was a 42" and the $517 price was good for Black Friday. The price is now $562. There was some other offer that was good through Nov 30th.
November 29, 201015 yr Any opinions on Panasonic plasmas? They have a 46" 1080p on their website for $517 until Nov 30th. I was told to avoid Panasonic. But that was over a year ago, so things could have changed.
November 29, 201015 yr Woods, I was talking to the manager at Best Buy after I bought a TV and he told me that he has worked there for about five years and he has three plasmas. He also told me all his family has them too. So I felt pretty good in getting mine. He didn't gain anything by sharing this with me.
November 29, 201015 yr I think plasmas have a slightly better picture. One factor to consider though is the room you will be putting the TV in. If there are a lot of windows, you probably should go with LCD because plasmas have potential of a glare issue.
