Covington Catholic beat St. Xavier in the 1999 season opener ... the biggest shock, looking back at it, was that CovCath was beaten in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

 

Forgot about that one, mostly because they weren't a champion.

Has Bell played any teams of that caliber?

 

Maybe Johnson Central? (Although I know what you'll say to that!) That's probably the only one this year that a case could be made for. I don't know how most view Knox Central, but they are a solid club. Of course if they keep winning we can probably put Boyle County on the list.

But you're saying they would "smoke" some of the higher-ranked 5A and 6A teams in other parts of the state, and they're not playing any of those teams.

 

I don't give 2 wipes about class. I think I have made that abundantly clear. A lot of people think that #6 in 4A is better than #1 in 2A (arbitrary numbers, I have no idea which team is ranked where without looking) simply because they are in a higher class. But you brought up the 2008 state championship team ... they didn't play anyone like that, either. In fact, they barely beat a 9-5 team from the Louisville area in the championship game.

I don't always subscribe to that theory, and I have no problem with the idea that Bell County could beat Ballard, John Hardin and the like. But ... to "smoke" them and wipe the field with them? I have a hard time seeing that.

I certainly agree that there are bad 6a schools that will lose to good 2a schools, aka Newcath and Beechwood have accomplished it many times. However, it is very rare that a top tier team in 5a or 6a will lose to a top tier team in 1a and 2a.

You can go by competition. Not comparing scores on a running clock is entirely different than having a team like that stay with you. I would also say this, Boyle and Bell haven't played good enough competition to judge how good they are. Of course, Boyle is going to change that next year.

 

I guess if you don't play Highlands, you haven't played anyone, huh? Boyle schedule has been solid and based on who they've played and beaten, I think they've proven themselves pretty worthy... By all means, they haven't played a mighty GCL team, which seems to be NKy's only criteria for judging toughness, but, Boyle's still a proven commodity and are coming off a state title, so, I think top 5 is well within the realm of possibility...

I brought up 2008 as a response to another poster questioning their strength of schedule this year. They breezed thought the regular season then had to fight, bite and scratch to win the championship. Which is really all that matters. I am of the mindset that you would want a couple games throughout the regular season to be tested and to learn to fight through adversity. Waiting until the playoffs to face stiff competition is a very dangerous thing to do in my opinion. But it worked once. We will have to wait a while to see if it works again.

 

I could care less if they win this year. I think they will. If they do, they do. If not, I will say "huh?" and go about my day.

 

As for Bullitt East in 2008. They just barely got by Calloway in the Semi's? So what exactly are you saying. It seems you are making my point for me.

I mean when it all comes down to it, is there really that much difference in the 1A-4A schools? There are cases where they may be but as a whole, not alot. I know my school (which is 2A) plays many 4A teams throughout the year simply because we try to play a tougher schedule than the schools around us. Many times the schools around us will not even consider scheduling games. In on own OPINION, I could argue that TOP to BOTTOM 2A is more competative than 3-4 other classes. I for one think that 1A and 3A are the weakest TOP to BOTTOM. Just this season, my team has played (4) 4A schools going 2-2, (2) 3A schools going 2-0, (4) 2A schools going 3-1, and (1) 1A school going 1-0. Currently 8-3. So you see, not much difference other than maybe 15-20 players on a roster.

 

As far as 5A and 6A schools, we have some around us that won't schedule us because its everything for them to lose. How does your program look if you are 5A and 6A school losing to a 2A school. Geographically there is not alot of 5A and 6A schools around us, but a few.

In some cases a 2 score differential is a beat down. Boyle County wiped the field with Christian County. I was there and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone from either side who will say otherwise. I hope Christian County makes it to the finals of 5A.

And there are plenty of examples this year to support both standpoints.

Hardly.

 

As impressive as Bell County's resume looked in 2008, much as it does now, they were hardly "smoking" the teams from the other parts of the state as they got deeper into the playoffs.

 

What makes you think they would do so now?

It all on the gameflow. We've all seen close games that weren't really close at all. I see a score of 35-21 in the Bell/JH game. Seems to be a close game, but when you consider Bell consistently moving the ball and scoring while JH's scores are spaced out due to a kick return, and a couple of long runs here and there. Kind of gives you the feeling that one team is superior to the other.

 

I am not trying to convert anyone to my way of thinking. Simply expressing my opinion this year on this team. "If" this game happened next year I may pick JH. Just not this year. Since it's not going to happen, we are left with a few bantering posts back and forth on the what-ifs.
