88'-89' I do believe Scott won the Region led by the Smith's and Chris Haynes. I also think they beat Holy Cross (led by McClendon/Pouncy/Houston brothers)in the Finals that year. GT is right about the Indians who beat Holmes (likely the best team that year).

Well. Boone Co. won the NKY regular season poll in 2009, was one of the only teams to beat Holmes during their state championship that same year, and lost on a missed layup in the regional championship rematch. Holmes was only the second NKY team to win state ever, so I think this Boone team deserves some mention.

Simon had a nice six year run but we always seemed to matchup with Highlands, and we just could never beat those Messmer led teams. Then we finally break through in '03 and had to face a very good St. Henry team. We played them three times that season and lost all three by a total eight points.

'99: Simon Kenton 26 - 5 (lost in semi to eventual champ HHS 63-49)

'00: Simon Kenton 21 - 8 (lost in 1st round to HHS 68-56)

'01: Simon Kenton 22 - 9 (lost in semis to eventual champ HHS 49-46 OT)

'02: Simon Kenton 17-10 (lost in district semis to eventual champion Ryle)

'03: Simon Kenton 22 - 8 (Finally beat HHS in semis, lost to St. Henry in the finals)

I would have to agree with those who put the 09/10 Holmes team at the top of the list. Defending state champions, state runner up the year before, returning 3 superstars, a very strong supporting cast and a great coach.

Stegman did play, I believe he started.

Yeah, they lost in the state finals in '97 to Eastern 71-59. Scott Co. won state in '98 with Ricky Jones & Scott Hundley as youngsters right?

1995 Holy Cross with Clark and Harney...

That HURT! HC moves the district to Thomas More, loses to CCH. Glad they finally started to seed the district, too late for that group though.

1988 Highlands - Cowie, Cox and Blasingame. The 1987 team played at Rupp with these 3 as Junior starters. Most thought they would repeat.

Yeah I remember that very good group not getting it done as Sr's, who won the Region that year. If I remember correctly wasnt it a Conner team led by jr's Keith Greisser, Jimmy Hicks, Larry Moore that beat them in the Region? Who won the Region in 1988?

Holmes won the region in '88 with Jennings and the Pouncy brothers. The beat Buckhorn in round one, and lost to eventual champ Ballard by 10 in the quarters.

Some of the best teams in recent memory:

 

09/10 Holmes- Aguably the most talented team in the last decade not to win the region tournament. Pittman and R. Johnson are up for best players ever to play in the 9th region (Ryan Ernst) and J. Johnson is now at Campbellsville but received D1 attention as well. Also had Demtrius Avery who was top 10 in region as a junior, as well as a junior class led by Kevon Rice and several others that were apart of a JV team that lost in JV region championship as sophs.

 

05/06 Holmes- Again, another talented team with Rice, Hill, Jefferson, Edmondson, Henderson. Probably one of the best starting 5 to ever play in the 9th region. Also had Braeon Avery, Terrence Clark, and Josh Nelson among others. This team was rolling through 9th region competition, Rice was kicked off the team after defeating Highlands , and Holmes loses to a Bill Walker led NCH team a few nights later. Had this team stayed intact and made it to the state tournament I feel confident that they could have done something special. This same Holmes team beat the 7th region runner up, Ballard, by 15 earlier in the year. Ballard lost by 2 to eventual state champ, J'town, in the region championship.
