Actually SK was #1 in the region that season for a short time after defeating Holmes in the semis of the Famous Recipe tournament. We thought we were headed for the regional finals but Holy Cross (who we beat like a drum in the regular season) played a three man weave during the semis and Brad Saalfeld played a great game to beat us. I still remember sitting in the locker room after that loss, it was a heart breaker. With that being said, the regional final was a great game with a great atmosphere.

I am 95% certain Hester was not on the bench for NKU vs Xavier the other night. There was a guy that looked like him while warming up, but after sitting behind their bench, I am almost positive it was not him.

Greg Rice told me he was playing for Detroit Univ. but I cant confirm he is on this seasons roster.

 

He told me the same thing, I believe, two years ago, after his second year at Columbus St.

 

I think he has to take some summer classes or something like that, and get caught up before he can be eligible for the team.

Incorrect on the last part. He was at Gateway last year working on becoming eligible. He had a solid 2 years but was not an All-American.

At 5'9'', Mike Hester is going to have a lot of problems at a level as high as NKU wants to play.

 

Hester was good but Jeff Krohman was one of the best guards to play for SK.

Bibbins is a better pure PG and has a better overall handle. That's why he played. He was very effective at NKU.

 

I thought Hester was a better HS pg than Bibbins. Thought he had a more complete game while Bibbins was more of a scorer. I also thought Hester bought more to the table in the way of intangibles to the position. As good as Hester was at the HS level he was probably even better playing AAU for a very good Shining Star team.

 

I also thought that Bibbins wouldn't do a whole lot at NKU and that NKU was a reach for him. Turns out he has a great career at NKU so what do I know!

 

I am rooting for Hester as he was one of my favorite HS players for his toughness and competitiveness but when you are a 6' or under PG it's not easy to succeed at the college level. It's all about the situation and Bibbins put himself in a great spot at NKU. Not sure if that same situation exists at NKU right now.

He is on the roster and no longer at Union, however I did not see him at the Halloween Hoopla and I have not seen him in the Rec Center playing pickup like most of the other players do...

The Cougars were 29-7 last season and won the Region 12A Championship, which is probably one of the toughest regions in NJCAA DII basketball. Head coach Pat Carlisle (2 years, 44-22) will have plenty of talent to repeat their 07-08 run as three starters and four total players return from the runner-up team. Pre-Season Second-Team All-American Greg Rice (6'4", 190 lbs.) will be the Cougars' one of the main offensive threats this year after coming off the bench last season. Rice poured in close to 10 points and five rebounds a contest last year and earned All-Tournament honors last season in Danville. The three returning starters include Jerrell Sanders (6'6", 210 lbs.), Greg LeSage (6'9", 200 lbs.) and Marcus Britt (6', 190 lbs.). Sanders contributed 9.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 07-08, while LeSage averaged 10.0 points and 8.2 rebounds a contest. Britt earned All-Tournament honors for his play in Danville while averaging 10.8 points and 2.4 assists per game in the regular season. Freshmen Rayshwen Goins (6'5", 240 lbs.) and Rod Hurst (6'2", 170 lbs.) will see plenty of action for Carisle's Cougars.

Men's Basketball

Region XII well represented in Pre-Season All-Americans

Region XII had five NJCAA Divsion II Men's Basketball Pre-Season All-Americans. DeAndre Nealy from Mott CC and Mark Anderson from Sinclair CC are First Team Pre-Season. Nealy, 1 6-6, 225 forward averaged 12.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and one assist per game last season. Anderson, a returning All-American, averaged 25.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 0.5 steals per game last year. Greg Rice from Columbus State CC and Aaron Crump from Kellogg CC was tabbed as a Second Team Pre-Season All-American. Rice averaged 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals per game.......

He also attended the JUCO ALL AMERICAN Camp. I know he was I think 19th in the country in scoring at 20pts a game and 5th in 3pt % at 49% after his sophomore year. After High School he really developed his Guard Skills. I could see him being in the mold of a DeAndre Liggins.

Liggins is a few inches taller and also possesses much more strength and size as far as body mass.

 

But I get what you're saying. Rice benefitted from playing down low in high school. When he got to college he was able to develop his guard skills, while also already having post moves to post up smaller defenders.

 

If not for grades in hs, he would have been able to play at a D1 program. Huggy Bear really liked Rice in HS.

Also, if we're going to use the state title as a gauge, St Henry 03 has to be mentioned as one of the best in the 9th to never win it.

 

That team beat a Mike Brock led team THREE times that year and if not for the injury to big man Smith in the first round of the state tourney, they beat MC and win the title, IMO.
