I wonder if this team has the leadership that we have seen on past teams. In the past, there have been clearly defined team leaders who would mentor the younger players and lead by example both on and off the field. Does this team have this type of team leaders?

I get what guru is saying, all I can say in response is in this case I'm pretty comfortable with mediocrity.

 

OK. Guess we can go with HHS is mediocre and still beats just about everyone else. And Ryle fans remember, it took one of your very best teams to beat a mediocre Brids team. Barely. How's that make you feel about yourselves? Remember I have posted vehemently against this "mediocre" moniker, as I feel it is demeaning to the other programs. Guess it is what it is.

You two aren't the only ones to wonder about this...............

I guess the use of the word "mediocre" in what the Guru has started is what is muddying the water on this topic. Do I believe this team is good or even very good, the answer is YES. On the flip side, do I think this team has flaws that stand out, again the answer is YES. By Highlands STANDARDS, this team is a notch below what we have been seeing lately, but still pretty good overall. This years team IMO seems to lack that edge that past teams have shown. I think it is a combination of things that seems to cause problems for this team at times. I'll timed penalties, poor tackling, over running lanes, not keeping on a block, route running and chemistry/leadership. All these things have popped up in many games this year and seem to aggravate the situation during a game. Past teams and esspecially the past couple did not have this many issues popping up to bite them in game situatons like this team. Injuries happen to every team and create many problems, but also many opportunities as well.

Again, all this being said I still think this team can achieve the altimate goal of EVERY Highlands team and that is to WIN a state championship. They just need to come together a little better and remain focused on the task at hand. Win out and quiet the doubters. Go BIRDS.

I think if they keep the mentality that no players go both ways you will have these types of years. You may have enough bodies to do it but you dont have enough Brandon Rollers, Austin Collinsworths, Tyler Grubbs' types on both sides of the ball. I can see keeping Towles and maybe the offensive lineman going one way. However, when you have guys like Jake True, Jordan Streeter, Corey Compton toting the ball maybe 3-4 times a game they are certainly being underutilized and could probably fill in on defense. I know Jake True was an animal at LB the past two seasons, Streeter's speed would allow him to play Corner in a pinch and Compton is a hard nosed kid who could play some OLB. Its obvious their first run option is to let Towles pick his way around and pick up yards. Until they start using Compton/True or Streeter as a MULE they should try and let some of them fill in for the injured.

 

JMO obviously. As far as mediocre, you might say that using Highlands standards but this team would still smoke 95% of the teams in KY and that aint too shabby.

 

 

You are absolutely correct Ryche. I never understood keeping some of your best players on the sideline.

This team is as good as any and is by far the best in NKY. They have destroyed teams all season and the defense has held just as good as in years past. Look at the numbers. The offense is certainly not a copy of last year' date=' but it's not every year or every 10 to 20 years that an AC comes along. [b']Time to back off the Birds with "mediocre" threads that IMO are simply meant to inflame.[/b]

 

Actually Whackem'n'Stackem I don't think these threads are beating started with the intent to inflame, but rather a bush league attempt to get gain either more subscribers or posters. The posters on this site are sophisticated enough to come up with their own subjects to discuss and certainly don't need to be spoon fed bush league thread topics. In the last several weeks the amount of minutia on this site is at an all time high.

Calling this team a mediocre "Highlands" team, a team that has one loss by 2 points, and is the favorite to win the 5A State Championship speaks VOLUMES!!!!!

 

They could win 5 more games, and STILL be a "mediocre" Highlands team!

You have to admit this - you know you have something uniquely special when a team such as this year's Highlands' team gets hit with the "mediocre" label. They are a very good football team living in the shadows of some great HHS teams. I think it would be very cool should the day arrive that someone could call a team such as this year's Ryle team "mediocre".
