I have come under some fire this season for calling this a mediocre Highlands team but that is exactly what Highlands is, a mediocre Highlands team.

I think people have confused your comment all season, guru. This isn't a mediocre team, it's a mediocre Highlands team. And there is a huge difference in those two descriptions.

Since you see clearly young grasshopper what do you think, is this a mediocre Highlands team?

I saw Highlands once this season, their Saturday afternoon win at Eastern a few weeks ago. They were good, certainly among the best 3-5 teams in Kentucky. But I do believe the last three title teams were all much better than this one. I didn't think this team seemed as quick at all positions as previous clubs. I didn't see a go-to back like previous teams have had, although their backs were certainly good. And the defense was strong and solid, but they didn't blow me away like the past.

 

Obviously I might not be the best speaker on the subject because I've only seem them once, but they just didn't pass the look test compared to previous additions (which I saw each on multiple occasions). I still think this team is very good and I believe they will win the 5A title. But I just didn't think they were on the level of the previous teams.

I ask you both this though...if Highlands were completely healthy, would you still think of them as a mediocre HIGHLANDS team?

 

I can't remember any years in the past where Highlands has had this many injuries from top to bottom.

 

Their depth isn't as deep as years' past because of these injuries.

 

I've said it all year though...if there's any Highlands team that doesn't win the state title, it's going to be this one. I'd be very surprised if they didn't win 3 straight after this year.

That's what I can't really speak to. I'm not familiar enough with the players, position-by-position, and whatever injuries they have. That certainly does make a difference in good, really good, and great. But ultimately a team is judged on their performance on the field. And they just don't seem to be the quality of some previous editions.

Well, I don't think we can answer this question yet. A lot of folks seem to think that Highlands will win 5A this year. If they win a state title it would be hard to classify them as mediocre, even by HHS standards. I am not aware of any title-winning Highlands teams that were considered to be mediocre HHS teams.

 

This year's team has been bitten badly by the injury bug, and that greatly complicates the picture when trying to "size up" the team.

I don't know, last year you had your senior starting QB go out fifth game of the season and start a sophmore that showed leadership beyond his years. And then you had your DI running back miss 5 games last year due to a broken thumb which he played on and off with since the Cov. Cath. game. You had an All State Linebacker play with a reconstructed knee his senior year and you had a DI Olineman with knee issues since he was a sophmore. You still had the occasional concussion with Rosenhagen, ankle issues with Fennell and Schlosser.

 

These were just the seniors.

 

The point is you have injuries every year and you have to play thru them.

^Henry is right. In fact, Highlands seems to be bothered by injuries a lot of years (back in 2008 HHS lost its best senior, Josh Conner, with a broken leg for most of the season, and then lost stud junior LB/TE Brandon Roller early in the playoffs.

 

The 2007 HHS team seemed to stay pretty healthy, as I recall.

The problem this year is that there isn't enough depth when the starters go down. I think this is what has really made this team inconsistent. Hopefully the Birds can get some of these boys healthy and make another run..This team scares me a lot more than in years past..GO BIRDS 20n10!!!!

I think if they keep the mentality that no players go both ways you will have these types of years. You may have enough bodies to do it but you dont have enough Brandon Rollers, Austin Collinsworths, Tyler Grubbs' types on both sides of the ball. I can see keeping Towles and maybe the offensive lineman going one way. However, when you have guys like Jake True, Jordan Streeter, Corey Compton toting the ball maybe 3-4 times a game they are certainly being underutilized and could probably fill in on defense. I know Jake True was an animal at LB the past two seasons, Streeter's speed would allow him to play Corner in a pinch and Compton is a hard nosed kid who could play some OLB. Its obvious their first run option is to let Towles pick his way around and pick up yards. Until they start using Compton/True or Streeter as a MULE they should try and let some of them fill in for the injured.

 

JMO obviously. As far as mediocre, you might say that using Highlands standards but this team would still smoke 95% of the teams in KY and that aint too shabby.

Agreed! I'm, still waiting for the descritions of the teams that lost to HHS. And now what do we use to moniker the Raiders? Decent? How's that make you fell Ryle fans. You squeaked by a medicre Highlands team at home on senior night. Doesnt make the accomplishment sound so grand does it? Cov Cath, Dixie, Scott, Beechwood, etc. well you guys should probably shut down the program if you can't beat a medoicre Highlands team.:ohbrother: What will it say for Ky football if Highlands goes on and wins it's 5A championship?
