As noted, Highlands won. Highlands D played very well; X' 14 points came on a late first half TD when Highlands potched a punt and gave X the ball on Highlands 5 yd line and the second TD came on an interception return. I was pleasantly surprised to see X passing the ball a fair amount. QB looked very good throwing the ball. X had a nice running back also. O line was not the prototypical big X linemen. I left the game wondering if we will see a more diverse O out of X next year.

Highlands O looked good, but they had to work hard for every yd and every TD against X. X has some nice players on Defense too. Highlands QB (McCoy) had some very nice runs at critical times and had some nice passes too. He had a couple of "just missed" on a couple of deep passes.

 

All in all, a very entertaining, hard played game by both squads. Which is what we should be talking about instead of the garbage about how the varsity teams would fare if they played and why this team isn't playing that team. That stuff coming from adults is pretty disappointing. While I've learned during my ten years on here to expect those type of comments from adults, its still disappointing. Only silver lining is that, as to those posters whose identity I know, their posts gives me some additional insight into the type of people they are.

 

BINGO ! you got it. Offense Line Size, strength and stability is hurting every level of St. X from Frosh on. This is most troubling, and does not look to improve as there does not appear to be any concern at any level about developing and O-Line.

Exactly!!!!! Highlands is the one making the calls to the Lou St X's and Trintiy on the Frosh,JV and Varsity level. Its not T & X calling Highlands. I can for a fact back that one up. T & X and History are the ones that need to step up their games and get this done and quit whinning about it. Dale and the Birds have done their part and have initiated the move. LOL. Go Birds 20n10

The last time was in 2006 at Paul Brown Stadium. Highlands was in the game the entire time but just didn't have the numbers to hang at the end. It was a beastly hot day. The weardown factor came into play. Can't remember the score.

X beat Highlands by two TDs in 06 and beat them by something like 45 points in 05. I think Dale learned a couple of very valuable lessons from the 05 and 06 seasons: 1. Highlands just did not have the depth to play two very big and talented schools in back to back weeks. In 05, it was Colerain and then X; in 06 it was Elder and then X. 2. In order to beat the larger schools, Highlands was going to have to develop a two platoon system.

 

In 05, I think we were tied with Colerain at half (or within a point one way or the other); starting QB reinjured his shoulder in the first half, back up QB went out with a concussion in the third quarter, and green as spring grass sophomore QB finished up. It turned into a blowout in the second half. Colerain just dominated us and physically beat us up in the second half. Traveled to X at Manual's stadium the next week and it was more of the same beating from X. In 06, we led Elder the entire game until the end, but got beat up in the game. When we played X the following week at PBS, we had one starter out (he was ejected from the Elder game) and had several other starters beat up to the point that hadn't practiced that week. We hung with X the first half and were actually winning by a point at half. X went up by two TDs a several times in the second half and we'd score to narrow it to one, then X would score and go back up by two. It really was a pretty good game. Back then, we had multiple kids playing both ways and X's talent, depth, the heat, and the injuries from the prior week really took a toll in the second half.

 

I think as a result of those two seasons, you won't see Highlands schedule two teams of the caliber and size of those schools on Highlands schedule in back to back weeks and you've seen Dale move to a two platoon system. I'm not sure we'll always have the ability to keep doing that, but if we can, it helps Highlands "level the field" somewhat when playing the larger schools and gives Highlands a huge advantage over the schools that play multiple kids both ways. So while the 05 and 06 seasons were disappointing from the standpoint of where we finished in the playoffs, they provided some great benefits to subsequent teams due to the "lessons learned" in my opinion.
