As noted, Highlands won. Highlands D played very well; X' 14 points came on a late first half TD when Highlands potched a punt and gave X the ball on Highlands 5 yd line and the second TD came on an interception return. I was pleasantly surprised to see X passing the ball a fair amount. QB looked very good throwing the ball. X had a nice running back also. O line was not the prototypical big X linemen. I left the game wondering if we will see a more diverse O out of X next year.

 

Highlands O looked good, but they had to work hard for every yd and every TD against X. X has some nice players on Defense too. Highlands QB (McCoy) had some very nice runs at critical times and had some nice passes too. He had a couple of "just missed" on a couple of deep passes.

 

All in all, a very entertaining, hard played game by both squads. Which is what we should be talking about instead of the garbage about how the varsity teams would fare if they played and why this team isn't playing that team. That stuff coming from adults is pretty disappointing. While I've learned during my ten years on here to expect those type of comments from adults, its still disappointing. Only silver lining is that, as to those posters whose identity I know, their posts gives me some additional insight into the type of people they are.

 

I think it's disappointing that adults can't understand that HIGHLANDS CANNOT PLAY IN 6A, how many times does it have to be said ? That's most of the problems with these threads , do you agree LN ?

Has WR Jac Collinsworth being seeing action in the JV games this season? I understand he was hurt earlier this year.

So I guess unless we are all saying how super these guys and the programs are, we are bad folks. Sorry I don't subscribe to that happy notion.

I thought boards were to talk about things of note-not just report the score to those who might not have been there. And if you note in almost every single thread about Highlands somebody says something about "what if the varsity played" and it usually isn't me. So happy happy joy joy the Bluebirds are the best jv and freshman team in the state. So what?

Getting back to the game, I thought HHS offense looked a bit flat except for McCoy. There were more than a few times I thought he was sure to be tackled only to see him elude guys for 5, 10 more yards - so fun to watch the way he can turn on a dime and go left or right to make something out of nothing. Having said that, you cannot base your offense solely on your QB getting all your yards. St. X did a good job of shutting down #84 David Christian who may have had only 1 or 2 catches all day if I remember correctly. Defense looked outstanding. I thought #66 Sam Chambers had an all-star day for the Bluebirds defense!

If not for our mistakes, St. X would not have scored in this game. Punt team needs some work but they'll get there!

Love the enthusiam shown by St. X fans with their group cheers. We only got a small taste but I can't imagine heading into their home turf and having to endure that nonstop during a varsity game!

 

Definitely must have been some tight defense as DC has to have atleast 15 TD catches this season thus far. Obviously McCoy used his legs wisely when his favorite target was covered. Go Birds

Hasnt played one snap and likely wont. They have a talented core of recievers at the JV level who are doing just fine. Once JC is healthy look out but until then probably a non-story.

I think the fine establishments in Independence ordered a batch from Ft. Thomas, I tried it last week its very potent. For a week it had me believing SK was unbeatable this year in NKY 6a, then I snapped out of it...But SK is still on the right track as a program, o and Highlands would have their jv in at half vs X....I think ukfan got some of the blue juice from Bluebird nation also, he overdosed on it![/QUOTE]

Highlands is a great progam, top notch all around. No arguing thier accomplishments. With that said, if they had to go through a mirror image of themselves like Trinity and X do each year, they'd have fewer titles.

I understand and respect this viewpoint, but you can also look at it from the flip side. Other than an occasional year when Male makes some real noise, there have only been two legitimate contenders for the large-school football title, T and X. You are right in that the competition between each of these programs is very high, but at the same time T and X enter each season knowing that if they can focus on beating their arch-rival, then there's a 99% chance they will be able to handle the other competition as well. About every year you know that T is going to have a solid defense and a very strong passing game. About every year you know that X is going to have a solid defense and a very strong running game. I don't think there are too many surprises with T and X every year... you kinda know what each is going to bring to the table, and about every year whichever team (T or X) that comes out on top between these two is going to win state.

 

In Highlands' class there has been more variability. Consider that in Highlands' class from 2001 onwards, Boyle County has won three titles, CovCath has won one title, LexCath has won one title and HHS has won four titles. A 3-1-1-4 split in title-winning is more diverse than a 7-2 split in T/X's class. Now it's true that the change to six classes has removed some major competitors from HHS' class, but starting next year BC, CCH, LC and HHS will all be back in the same class. Given that HHS has had more than just one major class competitor over the past decade, HHS has had to shift their focus on how they handle the class competition (for example, having to defend against Johnson Central's potent rushing attack is very different from having to defend a Justin Burke-led LC passing attack). If HHS were to focus on just one class competitor, perhaps they would actually have less titles than they currently do, since the more diverse competition requires them to plan against very different class opponents and only focusing on one may cause them to overlook others.

I care, because I have a son on one of those teams. And I think it's a great day to be a Bluebird ! Very proud of the JV team who has absolutely dominated every team they have had contact with this year. Regardless of what you may think about Freshman and JV football, just try to remember this: Each and every game played out there is important to at least 1 person. In my opinion, your "so what" flippant comment really minimizes what these young men put themselves through to be the best they can be be, but maybe you've forgotten that somewhere along the way. Get over your hurt feelings and suck it up. If the Freshman and JV Birds are beating the state's big teams, then maybe in a year or two, as Varsity players, they do get a shot at a T or an X on the Varsity level. If you want to be the best, play the best, and right now the Freshman and JV are doing all they can to prove that.
