If I am not mistaken.In the last ten years Highlands and Boyle Co. have played three times.2003 they played two times with Boyle Co. winning both games. In 2004 Highlands wins the 3A state championship against Boyle Co. I don't think 4A is going to be as easy for Highlands as 5A has been.I could be wrong,I've been wrong before.

 

WIth all due respect to the BC program. This is not your "old Highlands Style" program of the past. For those of the BC fans that remember the days of the HHS/BC matchups let me remind you that even though the coach for HHS is the same the flavor of the Koolaid has changed a bit. This is not your Highlands of old. And of course those were great Highlands teams in their right mind as well. Just a different animal in Ft Thomas these days. Just ask NKY. I for one enjoy the BC swagger and respect their program and the great championship run in the early 2000's. Go Birds 20n10

I will have to add, the 2003 team was one of the weakest Highlands teams of the decade...and they still made it to the state championship. While Boyle had what was probably the best team they've ever had or ever will have. Just food for thought.

Boyle County and Highlands are a lot alike... hard-working, dedicated players, strong community support, and excellent coaching.

 

A lot of people are talking about how this new realignment won't help KY prep football much, but I do think that both Highlands and Boyle County's football programs will benefit from the competition each will get from the other in Class 4A. Plus, teams like Johnson Central, LexCath, Holmes, CovCath and Ashland will make for a very challenging "eastern" bracket in 4A.

Hate to break it to you but the 2003 Rebel squad was not the best team of that run. There was not one single Division 1 Player on that squad. No Leffew's, No Brodie Overstreet, No Jacob Tamme, No Taylor Begley kicking. They were a solid, disciplined machine but not the most talented. I believe that honor would go to the 2000 and/or 2001 squads. Just food for thought. :thumb:

Just as I'm sure that Highlands is aware of what Boyle can do. (First three years in the same classification in old AAA, 3 Titles) There is a lot of mutual respect from the long standing fans of both teams.

I know it's a moot point to bring up, but if the re-classification that occurred in 2001 (which placed BC in old 3A with HHS) had been done one year earlier, things would have been REALLY interesting in old 3A that year, as it would have matched one of Highlands' best-ever, most talented squads with one of Boyle County's best-ever, most talented squads.

Looking at it since 2000, Boyle had a "down time" from 2005 to 2007 when they really weren't contenders for the crown in 3A/4A. (or at least didn't show it in the playoffs)

 

Highlands had a "down time" in '01 and '02 when they really weren't contenders for the state crown in 3A.

Boyle has won 5 titles in those 10 years and been to the finals/semi-finals another 2 times. (When in the same Class Boyle won 3 titles and the Birds won 1)

 

The Birds have won 4 state titles and been to the semi-finals/finals 2 other times.

 

Both programs have had up cycles and down cycles of about the same length in the last 10 years. So I'm not ready to say that Boyle won't be competitive in the next 4 years with the Birds.

I would also add that Highlands went through another "down time" in 2005 and 2006 (especially 2005)... in '05 HHS lost 45-0 to Louisville St. X, 45-14 to Cincy Colerain, 48-22 to Columbus DeSales and was then shut out by LexCath at home in the playoffs.

 

In the annals of Highlands football history, you don't come across many 45-point losses for the 'Birds!

I think that would have been a heck of a game. Retrospect shows the two teams were closer to one another than originally thought by some. I remember the cries from some that Boyle would play real football when they moved to AAA. :lol:
