The Real View of Lexington/Central Kentucky Football

Featured Replies

OK at the request of Voice of Reason I have started this thread.

Lets hear the real view of Fayette County football, mainly in reference to the big schools in Lexington/Central Ky.

Underacheiving, soft, unorganized.

I would agree with all of those, and would also add "poorly supported."

Easily the weakest of the so-called Golden Triangle.

Over-promise, under deliver.

Lexington reminds me of Clarksville, Tennessee. Very successful in basketball and very quiet in football.

I thought that last year Lexington produces some nice athletes. That Raglin kid comes to mind but I know there were more. I also thought Lexington Christian had a pretty good team last year. Has alot changed in a year?

LexCath and LCA flash and have been pretty good but the public schools in Lexington are an absolute joke.

I expressed my opinion on the matter last month. I'll stand by that, it seems to be picking up steam.

Dude, there has been over 900 threads started in the Football Forum alone over the last month and we have 22 other forums on top of that. I don't know how many thousands of posts that equals, but suffice it to say that my memory is not good enough to remember each of them. :D

So can you help a brother out and just repost your thoughts in this thread?

In the similar thread on N. Ky. football, Keep It Real did a good job giving a short statement on most of the football programs in N. Ky. I would like to see someone do a post like that on the Lexington programs.

The only program I am familiar with at all in Lexington is LCA. They had a great team last year and have been a very good program over the past 10 years. But this year's team seems to be struggling when compared to previous teams. I know they have perhaps the best offensive lineman in the state in West but what do they have beyond that. I do not expect them to be as good as the last couple of teams but are they as good as the teams 4 or 5 years back?

Lexington Catholic definitely looks to be down this year. I am just going by game results with no personal knowledge. Despite the drubbing they put on a short handed LCA team, Lex Cath appears to be down from last year for sure. What is happening there?

Bryan Station lost their coach and seems even more lost on the football field. That is looking ugly with a capital U. What is going on there?

Tates Creek looks to have a nice team this year with their only loss to an undefeated West Jessamine team.

Henry Clay, Lafayette, GRC all seem to be playing respectable ball but not world beaters.

What about the rest? What are the details on these teams?

It looks to me that one of the big issues with Lexington/Central Ky. teams is they don't have a "bell cow" program. You need that great program that everyone else is chasing and knows they have to do all the extra, off season work to even have a chance to compete with them. If I asked you who has the best football program in the area, would you have to say LCA? And they are a 1A school. A 1A school should never be the "bell cow" program for an area ... and I say that being a Beechwood fan. The numbers in a 1A school should prevent them from being the #1 program in a metropolitan type area. Who is the top big school program in Lexington? Is there even one program that the other schools know will have an 8 win season every year? Someone who knows football in this area help us all understand.

I think the big thing is the lack of administrative support for the Lexington schools in football. I've heard many coaches say, "I never want to work in Lexington." That turns off many great coaches. It also hurts the current coaches in terms of funding and things they can get done in the summer/during the school year. I think Catholic is still the Bell Cow of the area, but they are a little down this year and never back down from a tough schedule so it looks like they are struggling some this year. I really can't believe that there isn't enough talent in those Lexington schools to compete on a state wide level. Someone closer to the sitauation might be able to offer a little better insight.

Bottom line about Fayette Co. Public High Schools: Last state championship: Henry Clay 1981. You're telling me that with all the talent going through Lexington in 29 years that they can't get one team to reclaim a title? And as this year goes they are a combined 11 - 15, 7 - 11 outside the city. Tates Creek, this year's king of Lexington, gets shredded by a good, yet widely unproven and non-historic West Jessamine.

Theories: LexCath and LCA have amassed large amounts of talent. Also the formation of Dunbar and the continuous spreading of talent among the schools have lead to a lack of a "complete team." Again I will use Tates Creek as an example in the fact they have a plethera of speed but between the tackles is subpar. Take away the outside game and force turnovers as West Jessamine did, they suffer.

Another theory is the lack of a dynasty or dynasties. Trinity and St. X in Louisville have done so in Louisville and Highlands, CovCath, NewCath, and Beechwood have done the same in Northern Kentucky in their respective classifications. My definition of dynasty: Being a powerhouse in your region (area and classification) where either one or none have the ability to beat you outside a remote upset. With a dynasty comes two things (Northern Kentucky as an example): devastation of some programs such as Newport and Lloyd along with some in droughts (see Dixie and Bellevue) and the surge of talent (relatively) into other programs such as Bishop Brossart (in response to NewCath) and the 6A schools such as Ryle trying to top Highlands. If Lexington is looking to Tates Creek and Henry Clay to be dynasties, get consistent and beat teams outside Lexington.

:thumb: In the 70's and early 80's, Henry Clay and Tates Creek always fielded very good teams. They were a bench mark of talented, deep football in CKY. I have not seen them as such since about the mid 80's. (at least on a consistent basis)

Very little administrative/financial support for all sports in Lexington.

Extreme limits on middle school sports programs.

Bryan Station has tons of athletes but the administration there is really bad.

Catholic and LCA do take quite a bit of the talent, but I'd bet there is a ton of talent walking the halls in many of the public schools.
