I have read many times that Louisville football is weak other then Trinity and St. Xavier. Is that true?

Not 100% true. Louisville Central is always a contender. Louisville Holy Cross is making plenty of noise in 1A. Western is looking like they could be a contender in 4A this year.

Cantrall has:

 

#2 - Trinity

#3 - St. Xavier

#6 - Ballard

#9 - Male

#11 - Manual

#14 - Eastern

 

Lit has:

 

#2 - Trinity

#6 - St. Xavier

#7 - Ballard

#8 - Male

#10 - Manual

 

It's just that the gulf between T/X and the rest of the Louisville schools is perceived to be pretty wide.

 

 

Note - Cantrall has CovCath at # 18 in the state; while Litratings have the Colonels at #13 in the state.

The opinion that Louisville only has T and X is what is shown here on BGP. They dominate the conversations. Obviously two of the biggest schools in the state will have a high representation. The same is true for Highlands. By looking at the posts on this site, downstate would think the Bluebirds are the only good team in NKY.

I think because the gap between T-X and the rest is soooooo large that you have to base your opinion on those two schools.

 

How's this for a stat. Since 2000, here are losses to Louisville schools besides each other:

 

Trinity

2000 to Male (state final)

2003 to Manual

2003 to Seneca

 

St. Xavier

2000 to Male

2001 to Male

2002 to Male (twice)

2006 to Male (twice)

 

Pretty impressive for a decade. So while I think there are other good teams in Louisville they're not T or X.

Louisville has several EXCELLENT teams this year.

 

In 6A, besides X and T, Ballard, Male, Manual, and Eastern are all very good (even though Eastern didn't fare too well against the Bluebirds this past Friday), and Seneca is very dangerous.

 

In other classes, 4A Western, 3A Central, and 1A Holy Cross are all superb teams.

 

Around Louisville - but in the metro area - 3A Henry County is a worthy top 10 pick in that class, with two wins over solid 5A teams (South Oldham and Anderson County) and two losses to two top 10 opponents. And I think that 2A Christian Academy of Louisville ("CAL") is much better than their 3-3 record (losses to LCA by 6, Louisville Holy Cross by 8, and to Evansville Central (IN)).

 

2A DeSales may be second only to Holy Cross in Louisville in that class. This is a 2-3 team that is legit top 10 with easy wins over 3A Etown and 4A Bullitt East, both on the road. They lost to 4A top 10 Western by just 7, 2A top 10 CAL, and a strong 6A Seneca team by just 6 in OT.

 

Since the Etown area is generally considered to be metro Louisville by most statistical services, you also have to include John Hardin, who is ranked #3 in 5A.

 

All in all, I think Louisville metro-area football is in pretty good shape this year. X & T get all the glory, but there's some pretty good football played here.

I really feel that this year there are some very good football teams in Louisville....in particular:

 

St. Xavier

Trinity

Male

Ballard

Western

For 6A I think it is the case. And in the past few years, there is a lot of truth to it. Not as much as the other teams are "weak", but more that they are so much ahead of everyone else.

SK has beat Butler HS and Dupont Manual last year. The year before that they beat Louisville Male.

Louisville Football overall is still top dog in Kentucky with Northern Kentucky a distant second. The best football schools just happen to be in 6A, as you might expect from the largest metropolitan area in Kentucky, and therefore are overshadowed by the two dominant schools St. Xavier and Trinity. 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A are also well represented by the aforemention schools making Louisville tops.

 

As far as basing opinions on Louisville Football only on St. Xavier and Trinity, they seem to get the most exposure, are members of the large school class, and win year end and year out, so, justifiable or not opinions seem to follow their success and/or failures.

I'm not saying the only good teams in Louisville are T and X, but what I'm asking is, "Do we only think of T and X when we talk about the strength of Louisville football?". It seems when we have a thread about "Strength by Region", only T and X are mentioned from Louisville and I think that way of thinking is selling Louisville short.

I think, because there are an awful lot of NKY folks on this board and fewer Louisville-area posters, that yes, the highest-profile teams get all the talk. But let's face it, even for the NKY schools, how much talk is there about Scott High and Campbell County??

 

Louisville is by far and away - IMO, and I'm strictly talking about this year - the deepest and strongest of the various regions in the state this year. They have legitimate title contenders in every classification.
