Not sure we are comparing apples to apples here. Cooper is a new school that had some "misleading" enrollment numbers when they opened. This was due to the fact that seniors to be who were supposed to attend Cooper the first year they opened were given the option of finishing their high school careers at their current school, which made a lot of sense. You don't want a kid to have to change high schools their senior year.

 

As far as Highlands goes, they are a very established school with very reliable enrollment numbers and should be classed where their enrollment numbers reflect them to be. Cooper's current enrollment numbers this year reflect a 5A class and that's why I feel they have a good chance of getting classed in that group. Going forward, it's possible they could even move back to 6A the way Boone County is growing, however, that probably won't happen due to a 5th high school that is planned for the future in Boone County.

You make valid points and I agree with you. Whether or not the Birds had anything to do with their request is a good question and one we probably will never know the answer to, but I would have to assume it was a factor. Good post.

What was Lex Cath's argument? As to Cooper, they definitely have a unique and legitimate case to make. They are a new school and the enrollment numbers the KHSAA is using are skewed because of that. The KHSAA needs to use this year's numbers to determine where Cooper should be placed.

Going off of the alignment gchs_uk9 posted, which to be fair may not be the acutal one, Lexington Catholic is far closer to the schools in 5A (the Jessamines, Franklin County, Woodford County, even Anderson County), than those in 4A (Shelby County schools, North Oldham, Spencer County, Waggener). Perhaps that is not the place the KHSAA intends to put LexCath in 4A, but if those were the districts, there can be no denying that there are far more travel hardships on LexCath to be in 4A than 5A. Of all the arguments, theirs was the one and only case I saw where geographically, it makes more sense for them to be moved up.

 

I will grant you that Cooper has a unique case in that their current enrollment probably warrants them being 5A. The reasons I say they don't have a legitimate case is:

 

1) All requests are based on geographic needs only - which they obviously do not possess.

2) I fail to see why Cooper should be given different standards than all the other schools that were open both years and did not have a case where a new school opened afterward. I would not expect similar treatment for South Warren or Collins were the next alignment a two year one. The only schools using this year's enrollment are brand new schools and schools that were affected by those openings. I'm sure there are other schools that may benefit by using the current enrollment numbers. I myself was an advocate of those numbers being used across the board because after the first season of the alignment, not a single male from the 08/09 school year will even be in school. But the KHSAA made their choice, and it is what it is.

3) I think the KHSAA and anyone paying attention sees right through the reason for the request - getting away from Highlands. Do not ask me to believe that if it benefited them competitively that they would still make this request to move up. They are attempting to utilize their one and only avenue out of that class.

 

Also, Cooper will likely get their wish after two years. After that time, the KHSAA reviews significant change in enrollment (where 15% increase/decrease is significant) and adjusts accordingly.

That is correct sorta, there is an offer to another school and none of the schools granted are in the west according to what I overheard

So..... who are the schools you guys have heard?

Obviously we at Brossart are watching this very closely.

Being a new program and the smallest 2-A school doesn't bode well for us at the present time.

We had pinned our hopes on Russellville being granted a change of class, but they will probably not be granted a jump of 2 classes as they have requested.

We will just have to wait and see.

The "official" realignment is promised to be published by October 18th.
