This is a total guess but Cooper may be saying they should be in 5A due to enrollment, not hardship. Being a new school, their enrollment numbers may be skewed too low. They are probably a 5A school by size if you look at their enrollment right now.

 

Well first of all, probably wouldn't be 5A even if you used current enrollment, unless they gained 80+ males from last year's enrollment, which itself was an increase of 80+ from the previous year. Secondly, they what, are doing this out of moral obligation? Interest in fairplay?

 

Cooper may or may not be a casualty of the stupidity in using the 08/09 enrollment for a four year alignment, but that doesn't change the fact that everyone can see why they would do this and it has nothing to do with geography, or enrollment. But the fact that it cannot be geographically justified means they are parked where they are and will stay.

Highlands will win state titles consecutively for a long time in the 6 class system. Whenever they see a down class coming two years before they just play in 3a, win a title or two, get a good one or two classes play up. etc...... etc.... nice deal for them.

Sorry, but the system doesn't work that way.

There's a link in another thread to an article by Mike Fields who I believe got the info from the KHSAA.

This is all about running from Highlands. It also is a statement to how weak 5a is outside of Highlands and Bowling Green there is a ton of mediocre football making smaller schools feel like they could take the 5a grind easier.

 

Love how suddenly 5A will be the weakest class, with great classes coming in 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 6A. This is laughable. Let's fix this and move back to 4 classes like it used to be. Would make for much more competitive football.

Didn't Highlands travel to Hopkinsville and Covington Catholic travel to Cleveland to play Cardinal Mooney during the first two years of the 2007 realignment after claiming geographical hardship? They have both travelled to Louisville the past two years. How do teams claim geographical hardships and then schedule games 1.5 to 5 hours away?

 

Maybe the KHSAA should put a limit on the distance a team claiming geographical hardship can travel for a game. That would possibly stop teams from moving up to dodge teams.

Either way, geographical hardship only applies if a team does not like where they are classified.
