Geographical Hardship?

Featured Replies

What should be the definition of geographical hardship? Mine is having no schools within 60 miles, which is around a 1 hour bus ride. I checked on google maps and came up with these numbers. For the two traditional powers in 4A trying to move up to 5A.

Lexington Catholic- Schools within 60 miles

Martha Layne Collins 45 miles

Shelby Co. 45 miles

Mercer Co. 29 miles

Marion Co. 48.5 miles

Harrison Co. 34 miles

Boyle Co. 34 miles

Pendleton Co. 56 miles

Rockcastle Co. 47 Miles

Spencer Co. 60 miles

Boyle County-Schools within 60 miles.

Lexington Catholic 34 miles

Taylor Co. 46 miles

Russell Co. 45 miles

Rockcastle Co. 31 miles

Marion Co. 23 miles

Mercer Co. 10 miles

Martha Layne Collins 50 miles

Shelby Co. 50 miles

Does either of these teams have an argument of geographical hardship? Lexington Catholic could be put in a district that would be closer but I think the KHSAA needs to have a definition of geographical hardship. They need to determine if teams are trying to move up for that reason or for other reasons.

What is your definition?

I don't think the reason either of these schools are trying to move up has anything to do with geography as much as it does with algebra:

4A + H =

Sounds about right...........

No such thing as a geographical hardship.

Russellville, if in 1A would in my opinion have a case for geographical hardship. They would be in a district with Mayfield and the 2 Fulton County schools and all three are about 2 hours away

Good one and welcome to BGP Live The Game.

I could see teams like Russellville having a legit case, should it be placed in with Mayfield and the 2 Fulton schools. You're talking 2 1/2 hrs to Mayfield and 3 hrs to the Fulton schools. Of course, if they allow them to move up, the next closest school to Mayfield/Fultons would be Caverna at 3 1/2 + hrs. and that's even worse. Rather than have a 3 team district, I'd hope that the KHSAA would allow Ballard Memorial to play down, since they'll be either the lowest or next to lowest enrolled 2a school and that would eliminate the travel issue...

The one I just don't understand is Cooper.

Can a Cooper fan please explain to me, how Cooper can claim the hardship?

Really when three of the six schools in the District are CovCath, HHS and Holmes and indeed all three are in the same Ninth Region, how in the heck can you claim hardship?

This is a total guess but Cooper may be saying they should be in 5A due to enrollment, not hardship. Being a new school, their enrollment numbers may be skewed too low. They are probably a 5A school by size if you look at their enrollment right now.

Interesting that the majority of the schools seeking "hardship" are requesting to move out of 4A to 5A?? Hmmm.................

Quit running...get better...

This is all about running from Highlands. It also is a statement to how weak 5a is outside of Highlands and Bowling Green there is a ton of mediocre football making smaller schools feel like they could take the 5a grind easier.

Highlands will win state titles consecutively for a long time in the 6 class system. Whenever they see a down class coming two years before they just play in 3a, win a title or two, get a good one or two classes play up. etc...... etc.... nice deal for them.

Lets be honest. Highlands has a GREAT GREAT program. Teams in Ky (other than T and X) fear them. They have achieved this status through much hard work and dedication by the community and coaches. You can't take anything away from them. With that said, maybe Highlands enrolment numbers need to be adjusted up in order to account for the open enrolment policy of northern KY. They have developed a program that is soo capible of taking advantage of this policy that they have an advantage over other programs of similar size. Maybe the KHSAA needs to consider local policies in the classing system.
