It's a fun exercise, but probably just that. I certain would swap out some of the suggested teams...PRP, Boone County, Simon Kenton, and -arguably - Henderson County could be replaced with Boyle County, Bowling Green, Christian County, and John Hardin in my mind...

Since you were the first to bring it up, I'll reply here.

 

Therein lies a potential problem with the "super class". How often are the 16 members chosen, and on what basis? And what effect if any does "redetermining" the super 16 have statewide on redistricting?

Never happen ... no one wants to compete with Trinity and St. Xavier for a state title if they don't have to.

I know the KHSAA has a new 6 class alignment and no one is allowed to play up. But what if they still had 6 classes and a SUPER CLASS of 16.

Who would they be and whoever won it would obviously be the ENTIRE STATE CHAMPION. you can have 4 districts with them playing each other and a few non-dist games. At teh end do it like the sweet 16 and seed all 16 teams and play their own playoff.

Kentucky went to six classes based largely (if not entirely) on the recommendation of the state's football coaches. You really think you're going to find 14 schools to sign up and compete with T and X every year if they don't have to?

I agree with you Bluesport re: Boone. Agree re: T, X, and HHS. Disagree re: CovCath based on their recent difficulty advancing in the 5A playoffs (and before other BGP posters say they won a state championship in the past few years). Historically CovCath has been right there with the best 5A schools in the state and hopefully will get back to that level. I just don't think you can objectively say they're 1 of the state's best 16 teams right now.

With the risk of being redundant - this is how it used to be. It seemed to work pretty well with the Jefferson County 4A Champion playing the State 4A Champion. Trinity and X and will always be big game regardless of when they play. Maybe it is financially attractive to the KHSAA to have these schools play in the finals. But without a doubt having these 2 meet in final game most years is a determent to the statewide interest in football at the 6A level throughout the state with the current format. Since there are no lower level 'champions' (District, region, metro, statewide, etc.) it is difficult for schools to generate excitement and interest.

Awe, then Jimmy, Johnny, and Billy Ray wouldn't get their "ribbons" if we went back to 3 classes.

Best case scenario is a 5 class system...Have the biggest 24 schools with 4 6 team districts, rotated each year......Place the other 196 or so teams in the other 4 classes, with 48 in each class except for 4a and the extra few teams would go there.

Highlands would get beat, they would not beat both teams very often in the same year, but why would anyone other than those three wanna be in it? Good thing is, it would give 6a football some parity that does not exist currently due to the T and X advantage.
