Enes Kanter received more than $100,000 in cash and benefits...

A lot of legal-speak in this, but this is a blog entry from the NCAA's website. Article is dated Nov. 4, 2010 & speaks directly to the issue of European recruiting. Some are saying this is a PR move by the NCAA preparing for a Kanter clearing. Of course, the "some" who are saying that are UK fans...

An excellent explanation of an issue that may eventually bleed into other sports as well, especially women's sports that are dominated by club teams both before and during current high school and college seasons such as volleyball and fastpitch softball. And yes, while it very well could benefit UK and the Kanter situation, this is one of the better pieces of work to come out of the NCAA in a while. At least it's looking down the road some anyway.

The part that is giving hope to a bunch of UK fans is where he talks about how European club teams try to make a player difficult to recruit by moving him from a professional team to a youth team or vice versa. It seems, at least from this blog, that the NCAA is fully aware & publicly acknowledging that the European clubs are doing whatever they can to look out for themselves.

And their acknowledgement is both correct and justified. That is EXACTLY what is going on in Europe (and in other sports nearer and dearer to our hearts) and to turn a blind eye to it would be yet another in a long line of catastrophic decisions by the NCAA eligibility "branch." Be warned, the face of intercollegiate sports, especially the NCAA, is going to change dramatically over the next five to ten years. The major sports set-ups as we know them today will be just memories by 2020 if not sooner. There is WAY too much money and, soon, there will be WAY too many other opportunities within the sports realm to remain status quo. Enjoy it now folks, the Nike Buckeyes versus the Schutt Wolverines in a winner take all money match is not as far away as people think.

I heard that Dick Vitale on his blog said he has a great source that told him that Kanter will be cleared but have to sit out nine games! Hopefully, this is true and if it is UK will be respectable this year and a stronger team!

Go Big Blue!

I think that was Vitale's personal belief, and not prognostication.

Randy, exactly but he said based on a source that he felt was crediable this was what he projected! I don't know what to think but he's involved and connected with folks deeper in College Basketball affairs than anybody on this board that I ever read after!

At this point, this entire process has been ridiculous. We were supposed to have a decision in early October but the NCAA dropped the ball on that one. We are officially a day away from the start of the season and we still don't know a thing on Kanter's eligibility. I'm all for making the right decision but they have had quite a bit of time to sort all this out. The matter comes down to simply this: Are there statements/records that prove that Kanter took money in Turkey or not? If they do exist and are legit (we all know the shadiness of this particular Turkey basketball organization) then Kanter isn't an amateur and thus should be ineligible. If they don't exist, then he deserves to start playing right away. They are doing an injustice to not only UK but other teams like Kansas with eligibility concerns over Josh Selby. The NCAA needs to be entirely remodeled. At this point, I'm all for scrapping the NCAA and starting a entirely new college athletic association.

And the thing is we are looking at this just from a basketball perspective since Kanter is involved. Think about the Cam Newton situation. The NCAA was alerted about him back in January with still no decision. That case needs to be expedited more than Kanter's case because the current college football season is dependent upon it.

Yep. They've had plenty of time to "get it right." Everybody (the Kanter's and the Turkish team) has provided the NCAA with everything they're going to, and did it a while ago. Make a decision.

Maggard is saying there's a timeline now, but not saying more than that unless you pay for his info.

I would also assume any "penalty" Kanter receives he will get credit for in the coming games, starting this Friday against ETSU.

Completely different IMO. One is normal (relatively) clearinghouse stuff, and the other is a possible rules violation.

In Kanter's case, both sides have provided documentation. Review them and make a decision.

Obviously they are different, but we are still talking about 10 months here with some imminent ramifications. No case is as clear cut as you just made it seem about Enes.

I'm not saying its a clear case, but I'm saying they've had all the information for a while. This is not a developing situation.

Maybe it's been mentioned in here but I'm not rumaging through 340 posts.

Is it true that the bank in question owns the Turkish team Kanter played for?

I've followed this as closely as anyone, but that's the first I've heard of this.
