From a distance and going by results only Beechwood is slipping. They are not winning like they did or beating the bigger schools like they were. To think that any program was going to be able to maintain that level forever is unrealistic and it is made harder at a little school. Beechwood will likely keep on winning a great deal and may from time to time beat the big boys but ndot likely they will ever dominate like they did in the 90's. This reminds me of a similar cycle Mayfield went through where they beat all the local big boys every year and won titles. After Mayfield's 2002 title team they began to get beat by local teams which was unheard of but they appear to have righted the program and Beechwood will and is still elite but not like they were. Just my 2 cents worth from our experience

Well, I probably should just let this thread fade away and let this year's team hopefully put the doubters in their place. But there are some facts that need to get in the minds of those who may still be wondering about the current State of the Tigers. So here is a breakdown of the Tigers seasons since 1998:

 

1998 12-1 Lost in semi's to Champ Big Wins - CCH (8-5), Ryle (7-5), Boyle Co. (7-5), NCC (2-9) Losses - Middlesboro in semi's

 

1999 13-2 State Champion Big Wins - CCH (4-7), Owensboro Catholic (8-5), NCC (4-8) Losses - Newport, Bellevue

 

2000 11-1 Lost in Rd. 2 to runner-up NCC Big Wins - CCH (5-7), NCC, Sheldon Clark (11-2), NCC (10-5) Losses - NCC in Rd. 2

 

2001 9-4 Lost in Rd. 2 to runner-up NCC Big Wins - Simon Kenton (5-6), Breathitt Co. (7-5) Losses - Highlands, Holmes, NCC twice

 

2002 12-3 Runner-up to Mayfield Big Wins - SK (3-7), Holmes (3-8), NCC twice (10-3) Losses - Highlands, Lloyd, Mayfield

 

2003 13-2 Runner-up to Danville Big Wins - CCH (3-8), Holmes (3-7), Columbus Ready, NCC (12-1) Losses - NCC, Danville

 

2004 14-1 State Champion Big Wins - NCC twice (11-2), Holmes (3-7) Losses - CCH (7-5)

 

2005 8-4 Lost in Rd. 2 to LCA Big Wins - NCC (13-2, State Champ), Newark Catholic Losses - CCH (7-5), Bellevue, Kettering Alter, LCA

 

2006 9-3 Lost in Rd. 2 to Champ NCC Big Wins - NCC (10-5, State Champ), Dixie (5-6) Losses - CCH (12-3, AAA State Champ), Kettering Alter, NCC

 

2007 13-2 State Champion Big Wins - Dixie (6-5), Prestonsburg (9-4) Losses - CCH (5-7), NCC (13-2, State AA Runner-up)

 

2008 14-1 State Champion Big Wins - CCH (5-7), Dixie (4-7), Prestonsburg (11-2) Losses - NCC (13-2, State AA Runner-up)

 

2009 9-5 Lost in semi's to Mayfield Big Wins - None Losses - Highlands, CCH (6-6), Dixie, NCC, Mayfield

 

I think the only reason this is even a topic is last year was a down year by Beechwood standards. But I don't think it was much different than 2001 or 2005 except for the margin of loss to the big schools Beechwood played. Beechwood seems to have a down year every 4 years since 1998 and last year was that year. That's all. This year is going to be better than last year and next year will be even better.

I can think of more than a few teams that would be happy with that.

I make this statement without any hesitation - Beechwood's team next year will have the most talent of any team in school history.

 

If that is the case then Beechwood is definitely slipping. If there is that much talent in the junior class Beechwood should have handled Dixie and played what looks like a mediocre Highlands team to the wire.

I will not go back and see who made any comments about about slipping or whatever you may call it. If you know who made some of those comments throw the names out there Ram. I would guess not one Beechwood fan said anything about it. BW knew what talent they had coming up when they scheduled HHS. To go take on one of the best teams in the state is no small feat. Most schools would not do it. They would be more concerned about a win vs getting better. BW could of went and found some gravy team to beat 45-0, but what would they get from that.

 

I am not sure what prompted someone to start a thread like this, but it is probably the same thing BW usually hears. Jealousy, bottom line. BW does not make excuses. They go out and work harder to get better. I have watched a few teams in the NKY area practice over the years and No one works harder.

Please check out my list of Beechwood's record since 1998 and tell me where you are seeing this slippage. Granted, last year was more of an off year than the other off years in the 4 year cycle. Is last year and the big losses the reason you seem to think there is slippage? That is the only thing I can see. I think you have this memory that Beechwood handled the big schools when they had top notch teams. That just isn't true since 1998. Beechwood beats the big schools when they are mediocre/losing record. Neither Highlands nor Dixie are mediocre this year. When has Beechwood ever played Highlands to the wire? In 1999 your almighty Beechwood from the past lost to Newport and Bellevue. I am sorry but I just am not seeing what you seem to be seeing.

I'll be the first to admit I know very little about the game of football, so for all I know maybe Highlands is mediocre this year, but if Highlands is mediocre this year, then it's quite an indictment against Kentucky prep football, given that Highlands is probably the second or third-best team in all of KY at this point.

 

Also, I guess I have to wonder what the basis for comparison is. If the guru is basing his comment on the last three years of Highlands squads, then it might even be a compliment! Keep in mind, back in 2005 Highlands got creamed by Louisville St. X 45-0, and St. X didn't even win state that year! I find it hard to believe that there's a team in KY right now that could beat HHS 45-0. Perhaps the 2005 HHS team could be described as a mediocre HHS squad and this year's team could be described as somewhere between "mediocre" and "best ever."

:lol: I agree! I am not sure where Ru is going with his comments in this thread but IMO Guru is off target with virtually all these comments - Beechwood slipping, Highlands mediocre and Dixie should have been handled by Beechwood.

Hey, I make no bones about it, Raceland has never beaten Beechwood, and I am pretty sure Beechwood is the only team that Racealnd has played more then once or twice and not at least beaten once. Heck, we've beaten NCC and still haven't beaten Beechwood.
