August 16, 201016 yr I was in Gulf Shores from July 3rd through July 10th. We weren't able to get in the water until the 8th. Even then there were small tar bars rolling on the bottom. Before then I wouldn't think about. The beach was covered with tar balls from dime size to basket ball size and a brown residue from when the tide would come up.

I think it's a smart move for the President to go down there and actually show people that the Gulf is open, rather than just pay it lip-service. At the end of the day, I don't really see this as anything really all that newsworthy, but it's definitely more of a good thing than something to complain about.

Had he jumped in the local YMCA pool, people would be complaining that he did not jump in the gulf. Not to get too far off subject, but has anyone looked at the numbers as far as the amount of oil remaining in the gulf? Obviously it is a lot, but they believe 75%-80% is already gone, mainly through mother nature evaporating it all. I have been waiting for the White House to claim they had overseen efforts to remove around this amount from the water And people say global warming is not a good thing

Although to be fair, I don't think presidential vacations are "typical." Count me among those that see this particular "vacation" as a very positive PR move by the President. With the understanding that there will be those that find fault with what he eats, how he shoots his jump shot, his name, whether he sleeps on his back, stomach or side...
