Maybe it's not everyone, but it's a widely excepted practice in college circles now and I'm guess always has been. Have you drank before? Did you drink before the age of 21? Most of us would probably answer yes.

The James incident is unfortunate and should be a warning to anyone. That doesn't mean that college students aren't going to drink though, even his teammates at ND and people that know him. I'm just saying to let those who live without sin cast the first stone. Out of all the things college athletes could do wrong, underage drinking is probably not that bad. An 18, 19 or 20 year old kid having a beer at a party? I could think of a million things that are worse IMO. It only makes ND look bad because it made the news. There are plenty of things just like this that happen all of the time that get swept under the rug. Are you shocked that the players were at a party drinking? Welcome to the college life.
July 19, 201016 yr I'm not saying that I completely approve of underage drinking, but if it's done responsibly (not driving) I don't really care about it on a college campus. If everyone involved is over 18, which is legally an adult, I don't really care that much.

July 19, 201016 yr College football players shouldn't drink anywhere, anytime. College students, I feel the same way.
July 19, 201016 yr I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that 99% of college athletes have had at least 1 beer while being on a college campus for their careers. I don't really have a problem with it as long as they are being SMART about it. That means no driving, no disorderly conduct, vandalism, etc. Just my 2 cents though.

My guess is the young man from Ryle whose father is in law enforcement, will be harder on his son than the coach, school or court is! What could his Dad possibly do? The kid is 6'6 290lbs and I am sure is 18. Is he going to turn him over his knee? Kids are kids and they make mistakes. Punish them and move on. Give them all community service projects as I am sure its a first offense for most.

Yes it is a huge deal but kids can watch a friend die and pick up a drink the next day. Their brains are not fully developed to understand and make the correct decisions. It is sad but true.

This is one of the most insightful comments ever posted on BGP, in my opinion. A lot of people downplay underage drinking, but the consequences of it are undeniable. One thing's for sure: if the coach dismissed the involved players from the team this week, I bet there'd be a lot of thinking twice among the remaining ND players when they are offered a drink at the next college party.
