But the fact that unions as a whole seem to have lost sight of their purpose, those laws are needed now more than ever, because I have no problem envisioning an America where businesses would pay workers a dollar an hour because they can get away with it. We already see it anyway with companies leaving the US so they can pay slave wages overseas. That's my whole issue with the "lower taxes for corporate America" argument. I keep getting told that without a minimum wage, with lower taxes, Corporate America would thrive and grow in America. What that would do is make the fat cats fatter, and the poor poorer, and that's IF Corporate America would stop moving their operations overseas, and/or if those that had would bring them back. As corporations, entities have no soul. They currently, and would hypothetically, continue operations as normal. I don't buy the argument that prices would come down for products either, so don't try that one, anyone.

How much of the textile industry is now manufacturing abroad? Furniture? Same thing. The reason is simple. Those goods can be produced with a higher margin of profit by going to overseas workers and pay them 4 times less than here. (Maybe more) The manufacturing in this country is about dried up and I don't see it coming back in my lifetime.

June 17, 201016 yr Our country's long history of the business world abusing workers, consumers and the general public tell me I'm right. If I wasn't, why would we need child labor and minimum wage laws, or environmental regulations? The business world does a terrible job of policing itself and doing the right thing, despite the moaning and wailing of conservatives to the contrary. You are right it is better in Indonesia, and I wonder why all those Mexicans keep crossing the border. C'mon.
