Sure they can. They'll do it by paying bonuses to the executives who got them into this mess, and they'll do it by paying dividends to shareholders who stupidly employ said executives and still expect to profit despite the fact that the company they invested in is actively destroying the environment at an unprecedented rate.

 

Maybe I'm wrong. I would tend to think BP, while under more scrutinty than can be imagined, would try to preserve their company by doing the right thing. Going sour on what they are promising on tv would bankrupt them more than likely. I'm sure there are millions of shareholders that have nothing to do with hiring execs or paying bonuses. A lot of everyday working people are invested in BP to enhance their retirment. I just think they desreve a shot at it. Hopefully this third party deal will help them do it, and if they do, I hope they get the credit.

BP showed gross negligence in the days, weeks and months prior to the accident in failing to comply with safety standards. I have no faith that they would properly distribute any funds to those that deserve them most.

I just saw an interview on Anderson 360 with the father of one of the men killed in the oil rig explosion. He said that he has heard nothing from BP, including when he testified in front of congress and a BP exec sat 5 chairs from him. Seems to me that at least an "I'm so sorry for the loss of your son" would be in order. No, I think that BP is much more interested in saving their hide than they are about "making it right." I do have high hopes for this "3rd party" and think that it appears to be the way to go.

Their primary concerns should be 1) stopping the damage they're causing, 2) preventing further damage and cleaning up the damage that has already occurred and 3) fulfilling all other obligations to the economies they've wrecked in the Gulf. They can worry about their own hides after all that's taken care of.

I fully agree with the concerns you listed, but they MUST stay in business (making lots of money) to fulfill any of them.

I would think that since they are actively assaulting the Gulf Coast ecosystem and economy, that would suffice. Do you honestly feel BP would take care of this on their own without pressure from the government? I sure don't.

Is it true that Obama turned down assistance because it would have meant that non-union made ships and non-union crews would have been used? If so then my opinion of unions and the influence that they have on The Messiah has sunk even lower and I didn't think that was possible.
