Relief Fund or Slush Fund?

Featured Replies

President Obama and the Whitehouse have been saying that they are going to see that BP opens a relief fund (around 20 Billion) to make sure those affected by the oil spill will be compensated. I absolutely agree with this but one thing is bothering me…Who is going to decide who gets or where the money will be spent? Is BP going to get their opportunity to make things right with this fund? Is the federal government going to be in charge of who gets a check? If it’s the latter I expect the money to be consumed by waste, fraud and abuse. It will be handed out to every Tom, Dick and Harry. I’m betting that if the government gets their frivolous hands on it the waste will greatly outweigh that of the Katrina fiasco.

I say give BP a chance to make it right. I say Obama and his administration grimaces at the thought of BP succeeding in paying out the money while getting the credit…He would much rather see government be the “hero”. What say you?

No matter what happens, Republicans and Democrats will be pointing fingers at each other. It doesn't really matter.

I say give BP a chance to make it right.?

Seriously? They've done nothing right including ignoring potential problems.

Do you think they are suddenly going to "find Jesus?"

I trust the American government much more than I trust corporate America.

I would revise that to "I trust the govt much more than I trust BP."

And that's saying something.

The problem with your scenario is that BP, if given control of it, would find a way to divert funds to its executives or otherwise poorly account for its whereabouts the way many defense contractors have done during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars or in the bank bailout. At least when it's the government engaging in the waste, fraud and abuse we can vote them out. We're pretty powerless against massive corporations such as BP, especially when our government officials enable those corporations to steal from us, the American taxpayer.

If it's BP's money being dispersed I'm 100% certain they will not waste as much as government. Other than drunken sailors, I know of no one that can waste more money than the federal government of the United States. This is supposed to be the Land of opportinuty, why shouldn't BP be given just that, an opportunity? If they blow the opportunity we in fact cannot vote them out, but I'm sure they will no longer exist.

You folks out there that can't stand to see a company make big profits better thank your lucky stars that BP does. All the money they are spending right now would be coming out of your pockets if they didn't.

Those dirty cooperations that make lots of money need to be cut down to size. Could be the most ridiculous view of all. Where would we be without them?

I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks politics is clouding your judgment. It happens to all of us occasionally. BP cannot be responsible for the dispersal of money. President Obama has said a third party will handle it and that's the best answer IMO.

KO is spitting mad at the President after his speech. He and Matthews said he failed to be a commander-in-chief. It was a bit timid.

It's not politics clouding my judgment Clyde, it's the lack of our government to make fiscally responsible decisions. It's not only Obama and his band of spendthrifts, it's all of them, top to bottom, democrat and republican. I don't care who's in charge, they will have a time regaining my respect/confidence. When was the last time you heard me bragg on a sitting politician of any party? I trust none of them at this point. They will have to show me they can walk the walk and not just talk the talk before I praise any of them. I do like the idea of the third party though. I'll have to wait and see who this third party is before applauding. This can be done right and I hope all three parties work together getting the money where it needs to go, without spending $600 for a $25 item.

I'd like to see the President getting focused on the problem more than at BP. I'd like to see him get aggressive towards mobilizing and getting results other than being focused on BP. There will be a time to get after BP, and get after them hard. IMO now is not the time to attack BP or push cap and trade. Too much politics in this mess for me.

I do have to say that I must particularly applaud this portion of your post. :thumb:

I'm not arguing with you about the govt. I'm saying you're judgment is clouded if you believe that BP should be involved in the process.

Sure they can. They'll do it by paying bonuses to the executives who got them into this mess, and they'll do it by paying dividends to shareholders who stupidly employ said executives and still expect to profit despite the fact that the company they invested in is actively destroying the environment at an unprecedented rate.

BP showed gross negligence in the days, weeks and months prior to the accident in failing to comply with safety standards. I have no faith that they would properly distribute any funds to those that deserve them most.
