Why do you believe that BP would be doing environmental cleanup without any pressure from the government to do so?

Because I believe they have honorable intentions-and I am not trying to be funny. One can be profit driven and still be a responsible member of the community. Many companies are like this and I work for none of them-Toyota, many local banks, law firms, hospitals, etc.

I will have to strongly disagree with you here. With being told exactly what to do BP would do a little as they could get by with. To believe other wise iwould be naive.

Correction.

I would think that since they are actively assaulting the Gulf Coast ecosystem and economy, that would suffice. Do you honestly feel BP would take care of this on their own without pressure from the government? I sure don't.

That's not what I'm saying. I just don't see where Obama has authority to do what he says he's going to do.

It's a question that I was wondering the answer to myself. Perhaps BP agreed to those terms.

So when BillyBob crashes his car this weekend and kills himself and a friend-see who steps up every time. It is the corporations of America not the government. Business is the backbone of the country not government. Our business leaders give more money away at an astounding rate. Their generosity could not be done without. The government generally takes and wastes.

Business is not the backbone of this country; the American people are. Business, if given the freedom, will try to cut every possible corner in order to squeeze every possible penny out of it, consumers and other people be darned.

As far as business leaders giving money away, I question how much of that is done out of pure benevolence as opposed to the fact that it's just good for the company's PR.

You are right on the bolded part, wrong, completely wrong on the underlined portion. I like your music choices Jim, but you are a cynical musician.

Our country's long history of the business world abusing workers, consumers and the general public tell me I'm right. If I wasn't, why would we need child labor and minimum wage laws, or environmental regulations? The business world does a terrible job of policing itself and doing the right thing, despite the moaning and wailing of conservatives to the contrary.

Wasn't this the reason that started the formation of unions?

Wasn't this the reason that started the formation of unions?

For the first two, yes. But the fact that unions as a whole seem to have lost sight of their purpose, those laws are needed now more than ever, because I have no problem envisioning an America where businesses would pay workers a dollar an hour because they can get away with it. We already see it anyway with companies leaving the US so they can pay slave wages overseas.
