Aric Russell is new Campbell County Coach

Featured Replies

Well first let me give Coach Russell congrats for getting the opportunity to go back to his old school. Coach Russell IMO was a good coach at Newport. The only area I believe he lacked was in discipline with some of his players. Russell has had a lot of talent over the years at Newport but when you have some players that couldn't accept discipline IMO he adjusted to get through a season. This team (2009 / 10) that got Russell to the top was a very well discipline team - they had parents that were firm and respectful to the school, Coach Russell and their children - the parents kept their kids in check and focused on their futures. As far as the talent at Newport being slim IMO that is false - there is a lot of talent there still, it just needs to be directed in right direction and have discipline put in place. Mr. Rice (AD) has a great opportunity to bring in someone that will put it all in place and build a well balanced team while cleaning house of those that cannot accept a well balanced and disciplined program. Coach Russell - I wish you well and good luck with CC - you will be missed - you're a good caring person and you did IMO what it took to have a descent program at Newport - thank you.

It will be Mr. Draud who makes the call.

Fits the record the Camels like .500

KHSAA.org doesn't have Newport's coach listed for 01/02 and that season they went 10-16. Here's Russell's record starting with '02/'03:

12 - 13

10 - 18

12 - 14

12 - 12

11 - 15

12 - 15

16 - 11

29 - 6

114-104

Take out the once in a decade 29-6 team and it's 85-96. What was Code's winning percentage again?

.601 according to peaches 50-32

So they fire a coach with a .601 winning percentage and hire a coach with a .530 winning percentage ( .470 if you take out 09-10)

Maybe there is more to coaching than wins and losses????????

Well if that's the case - let's hope that he is makes a good decision based on someone that can keep the program going forward and install discipline.

Come on guys. Lets put the record to the side. I would like to see how many coaches could go to Newport and win with the types of things Aric put up with day in and day out and yes it is more than just the wins and losses. Aric has done a fantastic job with those kids. He has had to have a much different type discipline than most of you think of when you think of discipline. Some of those kids had some rough situations that Aric helped out with time and time again. He had as much discipline as he could without not having a team. There have been many times Aric has looked out for those kids well being whether it be academically, socially, or even attendance at school. Not to mention the number of players that have left over the years that could have helped him win but due to family problems, mortgage/rent problems, or any other number of problems had to move somewhere else. The number of players and families Aric has helped over the years far outweighs the number of wins and losses. There will be discipline. Aric will do a good job at CC and I wish him well.

It doesn't seem like many are arguing that Coach Russell will do a good job at Campbell. I think folks are simply frustrated with the administration and lack of forethought with the way the Code situation was handled.

The bottom line is this-despite being a very large school-Campbell County does not have a rich athletic tradition. Perhaps that is starting to change.

Good posts and Killercats you may be correct in regards to the talent in the system but not knowing who will show up or adapt to the coaching style of whoever they bring in is always the unknown down there. I hope they can build off of this past year's Championship.

What is scary is what if Arkansas Brewer stuck around and graduated with past SR class?

Arkansas was as talented a kid that I had ever see play. However, he was a major cancer.

Just Campbell hiring from within AGAIN. Hasnt wprked before why would it now

Wasn't he rumored to be leaving Nport prior to the CC job opening?

I started hearing the rumors that this would be Russel's last year coaching at Newport mid-season.

Coach Russell is an outstanding individual and yes he had to make adjustments to coach at Newport - and yes he has helped a lot of families in the Newport area. I wish him all the best at CC and I'm sure he will have a long and successful years at CC. When I refer to discipline I'm referring to the fact that there comes a time in life when one must install self discipline on them selves and not have to rely on someone else to install it on you. When you reached a sophomore in high school you should know what it takes to get yourself a better life - Coach Russell did all he could do for a lot of kids in Newport - he will be missed and I for one hope to attend a few games at CC to cheer him on.
