NCAA Investigating Bledsoe's Past

Featured Replies

This is an old story. There were whispers regarding Bledsoe around the turn of the new year. A few of these whispers came from the Louisville camp, in which supposedly was told to them by a recruiting analyst.

A few things here.

How in the world did someone get a hold of his transcripts? That is a violation of his privacy.

It is not uncommon for someone in schools to give money to needy kids in urban schools, for gas and electric bills and so forth.

FWIU, the Hayes school was absolutely the pits of a school in Birmingham.

The overall scope of his GPA jump is not that significant, if he is replacing prior poor grades.

If you can replace a D in a class with an B that significantly will increase your GPA.

Some districts will allow you to replace as many as you want, some will only let you do a few.

There was the one kid from Florida, playing football, who replaced something like 8 grades with better grades and achieved a qualifying GPA, but the school district policy only allowed for like 4 to be replaced. He was going to USF and then they would not admit him, so he looked at other schools...I believe UL was looking at him, don't know where he ended up.

The grade increase is possible, especially if he was able to replace grades and take on-line courses.

This is not like his transcripts were altered...or something shady like that.

The one part that catches the eye is that a college coach said they were looking for money. Of course that won't be proven.

I think Katz's story sheds more light on the matter.

One other thing to consider is that his high school coach did not want him to attend UK.

I guess the thing UK would be guilty of is taking a risky kid getting eligible.

I don't see how they could prove a school cheated, unless they altered his grades after his teachers had already given them. Who is to say that he didn't get straight A's? We all have known teachers that cater to athletes, or teacher's kids, or insert situation here. Sure his grades seem fishy, but how can the NCAA prove that he didn't earn those grades? If the school says he did, and there is no paper trail at the school I don't see how they could punish anyone.

Chatted with one of the best college bball hoop writers and he feels this is a witchhunt and that hundreds of kids qualify like Bledsoe did each year in football and basketball.

Duke was recruiting Bledsoe. Florida was recruiting Bledsoe.

Would they have done the same thing if kid went to Duke?

Holy crap, the kid went from a 15 to 17 on his ACT. That is an ungodly jump in score.

Is anyone really surprised by this? More than a few people, myself included, said that UK sold their soul to get back in the national spotlight. You figured UK was going to have to vacate wins eventually, but after the first year?? Probably a good thing they didn't win the national title and I'm looking forward to all the Cal defenders if this story ends up proving true.

I'm not saying the NCAA doesn't have their own fair share of problems in how they handle things, but my goodness, how many other coaches CONTINUE to have these things happen to them.

Overreact much?

It is a risk you take when you recruit the best. Because the best don't attend class. Kids are cheated out of an education because some high school coaches sell their souls to keep these kids.

I don't blame any collgege coach for recruit the best. They can't control others coming in and being curupt.

Evidence of NCAA dealings with Duke clearly would lead one to think this.

Maggette got cash, clearly deeming him ineligible, yet that case just vanished.

It is a hit piece clear and simple.

Not ALL of them. Dangerous stereotypical statement. Many yes, all no.

Have to love all of the non-UK fans on here bashing UK.... No one had much to say about UConn though and they actually got caught cheating. Blah, blah, blah, cry me a river.....

Matt Jones on KSR actually has a pretty good writeup about the situation right now.

It's a pretty solid recap of the situation...

I guess the Coach Cal era has offically begun:idunno:

It's just seems like Thamel has an ax to grind with Calipari. Seems like pretty irresponsible journalism to me.

UK was not even in the hunt for Bledsoe when this allegedly happened. It will be interesting to see what happens. You can rest assured that the public will blame Calipari for this IF it turns out there was any funny business.

Maybe major universities need to start hiring PI's to investigate every kid's potential eligibility issues as the high schools don't always do it and the NCAA is tremendous at finding out after the fact.

GT was all over this last year, ... gotta give him his credit for raising the red flag even then.
