It seems to me that Highlands dosn't want any part of X or T in the regular season. Let alone have to go thru them for a State Championship. As long as they never play them or lose to them they can always say that they are the best in the state. Year after year there is always some reason they can't play them. And yes I know they play 2 classes up already. IMO

Wow! First I heard of this, I guess we scheduled Cincy St X because that squad was a pansy. Perhaps the Louisville squads can remind us of their outcome with the same team last year. We fear nobody and at least each year HHS can say they are in the discussion of the best team in state many others cannot.

Its good to know we agree on this one

Your killing me.

Going by last years schedule, since I don't know Ryles schedule for this year, Ryle played Highlands twice and SK once and lost to both. Other than those two on Ryles schedule, I certainly didn't see anything earth shattering.:idunno:

What dose Ryle have to do with Highlands playing X or T???? Your reading way too much in to this. I have no disrespect for Highlands. They have GREAT program. By far the best in NKY. I am saying that if they have a choice they would not pick to be in a Super Class. Do you think they would????? And trust me I have no love for Ryle. (I may have coached some of their kids when they were young.)

Your saying Highlands doesn't want to play X and T. I completely disagree. Highlands will play anyone they can schedule. Maybe Ryle does also but last years Ryle schedule was a little lack luster other than the teams mentioned that Ryle lost to. Before you throw stones at Highlands strength of schedule maybe you should look in your own back yard.

I thought this was about super class. It sounds like you think it is about Ryle vs Highlands. Do you think Highlands would want to play in a super class????

At this point I don't know which number of classes is best...I'll say that I dream of a super class, be it 16 teams or 32.....Trinity, X, and Highlands have to be in the same class, IMO.

I don't think anyone really believes Highlands would dodge a Trinity or an X in a regular season game. However in my opinion it has seemed as though Highlands doesn't like too put more than one or two big time opponents on their schedule per year. It's a smart move though. Just an oppinion from what I've seen happen to some pretty good CCH teams take 3 to 4 losses because they've bitten off a little more than they could chew scheduling wise.

BTW, the idea of a "Super" class would be worse than the peice of junk system KY has now. I can imagine all the moaning and groaning that would go on all over the state. Schools would want to be in when they anticipated a "super" team but would want to be out when their schools club wasn't so super. As of now, the only schools I could see going for the Idea would be T and X, for obvious reasons.

Fair and, more importantly to me, respectful post. Any school the size of Highlands or CovCath would have to look carefully at the prospect of playing several much larger schools back to back in the playoffs. I think both of our programs have seen the difficulty of playing two much larger schools in successive weeks. In 05 when we played Colerain and Lou X, and in 06 when we played Elder and Lou X, in successive weeks it was very difficult.

Having said that, if Highlands could be certain that they would continue to have the depth of talent that they had last year and will again have this year maybe they wouldn't have the depth problems that really hurt them in 05 and 06. In talking with Dale recently, he's really jacked about this year. He has heard all the talk about the Birds losing all the talent from last year's Senior class and is smiling. He truly feels that, for the first time ever, he has 60 kids (out of the 81 on the squad) whom he feels are legit varsity football players. There is so much depth of talent that no one, not one single player, has been assigned positions on both sides of the ball. Which obviously provides certain huge advantages over when you have even a few kids practicing or playing both ways.

Not only do you have the advantage of kids staying fresher in the games, you have the advantage of being able to coach the kids on the sidelines during a game when the other unit is on the field. An advantage that shouldn't be over looked. Plus when you only practice on one side of the ball, the amount of instruction a kid receives doubles, as no coach is assigned coaching responsibilities on both sides of the ball. If you place much emphasis on the quality of coaching, the benefit of getting twice the amount of instruction time from quality coaching is simply huge.

All of which means that I wouldn't be as sure as jarheade that Highlands wouldn't be willing to play in a Super Class if it was to occur. Even more so if the playoffs were set up so that X and T would have to always play one another before the state game, thus eliminating the possibility of having to play those teams in back to back weeks (which would remain a daunting task for a school Highlands' size even with the increased numbers).

Perhaps a more interesting question may be: how many schools that are currently in 6A, if given the option, would jump at the opportunity to not play in the super class? Any one?

I voted for 4, but with only 220 teams, maybe 3 is even better. Until there is more parity in KY football, 4 is all there should be. The playoff system in use in KHSAA is terrible, with too many bad teams getting berths. I'm sorry, but the concept of getting a playoff berth when a team is below .500 is just nonsensical. And when 1-9 and 0-10 teams get in, just give up. It's supposed to be about competition, not being rewarded for showing up and withstanding a beating.

Ref, I agree with most everything you said but let me make one statement to this part. Many people talk about a team being .500 and they usually mean over the entire 10-game season. But many very good small schools have a hard time getting games with opponents of the same size. They have to play their non-district games against bigger opponents. That can sometimes lead to a poor record. This has happened to schools such as Danville, Frankfort, Louisville Central among others over the years. Those teams finished 4-6 or 5-5, but then went on to win big in the playoffs. So maybe it would be better to emphasize that the .500 record should be in district play because you can control your schedule there.

I understand that mentality; I really do. Some of the first round games aren't good for much other than getting the younger kids (and next year's starters) some playing time. Which I guess isn't that bad of a side-effect. But even if you are correct, how do you justify all the basketball, baseball, volleyball etc teams making the playoffs/tournaments regardless of their records (and associated first game blowouts) but football teams being treated differently under your line of thinking? Isn't the extra week of practice for kids returning of value? What somewhat befuddles me is when weak teams are getting blown out in the first game of the playoffs and the coaches of those teams play their seniors the entire game. I understand the sentiment of letting the seniors play their entire last game, but if a coach is trying to build a program, I can't understand why he doesn't, once the game is out of reach, immediately pull the seniors (perhaps to an ovation from their fans) and let next year's players get some playoff/game experience.

I agree totally! Too many first round games end with 60 to 70 point victories over 1-9 and 0-10 teams. These games are a joke. The coaches, players and fans know it. When will the KHSAA eliminate five rounds for the playoffs? The everybody deserves a trophy mentality doesn't work in football!

All well thought out pieces. 4 should be the number maybe even 3. I respect Highlands 100%, but the truth is they don't schedule Louisville St. X and/Trinity for a reason and they know it. They are selective whom they schedule and rightfully so. The truth is though they could not play with the larger schools week in and week out and win the way they do now. They would be opposed to a super class. I believe their agenda now is to be recognized on the mythical national stage. The Bluebirds win over Cincy St. X gave them this confidence. I would only point out that this was their lone win over a GCL school in quite some time. The bottom line is Highlands is awesome for the size school they are, but not nearly as powerful as they would try to convince all of the rest of us that they are. They would perhaps win one of 5 vs. Louisville Trinity or Louisville St. X.

Could the state championships be layered? Have four class champions who could call themselves state champions. Let these four teams play an additional 3 games and crown an overall state champion as basketball does.

Would be cool dog daze, but only one class would go for it-the largest class, and honestly St. X vs. Mayfield would be a massacre. (No disrespect intended towards Mayfield.)
