American Indians were not made full-fledged citizens until 1924 when Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act.

Just saw an interview with a Texas legislator on MSNBC who is introducing a similar bill to the Arizona one for Texas.

 

Said simply it would be like a driver's license and you would be asked to produce it as police officers request it no different than when they ask for your driver's license.

Does the birth have to be documented? Are you telling me that an illegal pregnant Hispanic woman can crawl under a border fence, have her baby right there and the baby be legal?

It's a real problem that there are not enough laws to make it difficult for an illegal to live here, this needs to be addressed. Absolute proof of citizenship should be required to rent or purchase housing or to open a bank account. Checking immigration status, as described above by LBBC, shouldn't be viewed any differently then when they check for outstanding warrants or ask for proof of insurance. It's certainly no more invasive.

Bill Mayer from HBO was just on "This Week" and first said that Republicans liked less government intrusion unless you were a minority and that they were racists. Then when called out on it, he rephrased. I am not saying all Republicans are racists but if you are a racist, you are probably a Republican."

 

I guess he is saying racism only occurs from a white race to all minorities and it is not racism for a minority to dislike whites.

Great in theory. I doubt many illegals are opening bank accounts, and as far as housing, one legal produces the paperwork and 50 illegals live in the apt. Two places where the problem needs to be addressed. The employers hiring these people, and the border. Take out the earning incentive, and make a border crossing life threatening, and that might slow it down. Again being outside the situation it's real hard to form an educated opinion. But it does sound like the problem in AZ is serious enough to come down hard on the lawbreakers. Real hard

After reading through all this the only part that makes sense in the punishing companies for having illegal workers. Other than that I don't see what this law provides that we don't already have. Obviously something needs to be done if the people of Arizona are in favor of it to the tune of 77%. Someone said the majority of the population there is Hispanic. I wonder what % of them were in favor of this?

I watched the show. Take a course in logic. I don't agree with most of what he says, but what he said was that if you are a racist, you are probably a Republican. That is not the same as all Republicans are racists. In his initial statement he said that Republicans seem to not like intrusive government, unless the intrusion was against a minority. On that, I think he may be right. I'll carry it a step farther. Most of us don't like government intrusion, unless the intrusion is against something we don't like or people who aren't us. That holds true accross the political spectrum, left to right.

But some do (or did) pay taxes, that's why they had an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number and it made it perfectly legal to do.
