World History (1500 to the present) - required US History (Reconstruction to the present) - required Third Social Studies Class - required however, you must be sure that 5 strands are covered 1. US History - check, 2. World History - check, 3. Civics, 4. Geography, 5. Econ. Where you put 3,4 and 5 is up to you. Many schools do an integrated Social Studies course during their freshman year that combines those three. Yes. And my district requires 1/2 credit of Political Science.

If a student chooses to take American Gov't there is no way around the discussion of Hamilton and the bank and why the US having debt (at that time) was good. And why he and Jefferson 'fought' over the power of the government - central or de-central. True, but the part about deficit spending that was good wasn't due to the government providing social programs. It was to build a military, purchase more land and fund the army that was going to be necessary to settle it, and to build infastructure and interstate commerce.

Hamilton decided that the NEW government should take on the debt that had been incurred by the individual states during the Revolution. His notion was that as the Federal Gov't paid off that debt it would gain legitimacy with other world powers.

His notion was that as the Federal Gov't paid off that debt it would gain legitimacy with other world powers. You are correct, for part of his notion. He also felt that by war debt, establishing a national bank, and increasing deficit spending, the new government could centralize power at the federal level. Deficit spending had to occur at the federal level after the NW ordinance of 1787. There were going to be constant battles to be fought, and the navy had to basically be started from scratch. It also didn't take very long for commerce to be interrupted on the open seas by the British, and their naval dominance on the great lakes to become an issue. Hamilton, IMO, was correct. If you don't pay for things that are necessary to the entire nation at the federal level, you don't truly have a federal power. The constant question has been what is necessary?
