Ask yourself why Obama is making such an issue of Arizona passing a law thats really the same law as the as the Federal law. The answer is politics. Voters, plain and simple. That's not leading, that's doing the same thing thats been done. Nothing. I hope I didn't insinuate that I thought we should "continue doing nothing". I think the laws already in place should be plenty to solve the problem if enforced. I just don't see this particular law sending many illegals back where they belong, especially now, do you? If I thought for one second that this law would herd them out by next week I'd say have at it. A hundred new laws won't solve it if they are not enforced. With that said, I fully understand Arizona and it's citizens approving of this law and wouldn't have a problem if it remains in place. I can only imagine what they are going through. Make no mistake my brother, I fully understand that this whole thing is politically driven...On both sides. There's no way you and I can think like illegal Hispanics. If I were to become an illegal immigrant (by choice) in another country and the President and entire government used me as a political tool (with no true concern for my welfare at all other than my vote) I would take a crap on the nearest federal property and leave. This bunch of bull dung about having to show "papers" and comparing it to Nazis is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I don't know about those on the left, but I have to show my "papers" several times a year. When I use my debit card, when I renew my license, when I use my passport, when I get pulled over by police, when I get a loan and the list goes on and on. My son travels all over the world and has to produce his "papers" repeatedly without even showing "reasonable suspicion". In my honest opinion, our government, including Barack Obama couldn't care less about illegal immigrants in any way other than using them as a political tool. It would be very hard to convince me otherwise.
April 29, 201016 yr Every time that education is discussed it is the lack of ability and commitment from teachers that is the fault. The message is that we care more about keeping our jobs than helping kids. THat is why we take tens of thousands of dollars in pay cuts to be a teacher and not work in the business/research world. The Arizona police officers have joined us in the mindset of society that they are incapable of doing their job correctly and have even been called out by the President in that regard. Explaining my post but let's drop it there and not threadjack the rest of this good discussion on Arizona. It's becoming very clear that Obama thinks most police officers are good at acting stupidly.

April 29, 201016 yr It would have to be documented. The child should be treated as any other child that has a parent arrested. The same process, whatever it is. If the parent is deported, the parent should decide if the child goes with him/her or stays with legal family members. The child should remain legal (according to the law) should he/she return some day.

Well, some claim that the 14th amendment makes place of birth qualitification for automatic citizenship. But it has not really been fully tested up through the Supreme Court of US. Wong Kim Ark case is the usually referenced. But Wong Kim Ark was not a child of illegal aliens so it is hard to map this case to todays situation. But WKA is the case that is referenced to establish the claim of 'anchor baby citizenship'. It is not really settled law since no pure anchor baby case has made its way to the USSC. One thing for certain - the intent of the 14th was to ensure freed slaves were allowed to enter into society since many states banned them from state citizenship. Its intent was certainly not grant children of non-citizens automatic and immediate US citizenship. 14th Amendment: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. As note - American Indians are specifically called out as non-US citizens based on this since they are under the jurisdiction of their tribes laws. Anti-anchors will claim that the highlight phrase prevents automatic citizenship since an anchor baby would likely also be subject to the jurisdiction of their parents country. They will argue that the intent was to read as 'and subject to the sole jurisdiction thereof'. Citizenship laws in the US are a messy thing.

How do you twist this: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. Or, would you un-twist it by inserting "legally" before "born" into this amendment to the Constitution?
