Not trusting the government didn't just start with the present administration. It really got a big start from the Warren Commission Report on the assassination of President Kennedy and Vietnam.

There is also a CONSTANT drumbeat from the right at this point that the government is bad. That does have an impact.

The drumbeat is against big government, its intrusion into our daily lives and the huge debt it has rung up.

When the people fear the government it is called tyranny. When the government fears the people it is called freedom.

I can't recall a time in my life when I did trust the government.

Watergate and Vietnam pretty much influenced me that way.

I thought you would call that Revolution. :thumb:

Yes there is and yes it does, but I think this poll reveals a major, major frustration that the common person has with government. Others have identified the moments in history where this distrust took root. Most every President has done his fair share in further alienating a significant contingent of Americans. Clinton/Lewinski, Bush/Iraq, Obama/Health Care.

Americans are simply frustrated with how things are going. Democrats are in the sights right now because they have the power, and they're spending money at astronomical rates. Republicans may benefit from a poll like this, but their ineptitude is still fresh in the memories of most Americans, so they may not see power come in the way they anticipate.

I really do believe that the country is ripe for a third party uprising come 2012 or 2016, but I don't know exactly what that third party will look like.

That sounds about right.

That sounds about right.

Trust in the government peaked in 2000 and began to spin downward after that. Just like the economic system that Obama inherited, he inherited this movement as well. It will go up before 2012 when he is re-elected.

I started distrusting the government on May 4, 1970.

Every administration claims to have "inherited" the problems they face. However, the buck stops at the White House. If you can't take the heat then you need to get out of the kitchen. That goes for each administration that wants to blame the last for its problems. I have never trusted BIG government . . . and Obama's policies are making an already HUGE government ENORMOUS . . . we need change and not the kind he is pushing. Less government and more power given to the people. I do not need, nor do I want government dictating how I should spend my money, who I need to "give" my money too, what I need to eat, where I should eat, what I should drive, where I should drive, . . . well you get the idea.

Puke Hyperbole much?

Did you not see the part of my post where I said the trust of the government will go up before 2012 when Obama is re-elected. The economy is turning around now and trust in the government will grow and Obama will be elected in 2012. After there is a "domestic terrorist event" that will jerk everybody back to reality . . . people will start to respect Obama and the work he is doing and he will be re-elected.

How can you be so wrong so often? Trust in government was at 73% when the poll was first taken in the 50's. 40% in 2000, 44% in 2004.

Keep making excuses for Obama, that will get him re-elected.
