April 18, 201016 yr Remember the talk that the Big Ten would take 12-18 months to decide whether to expand? An accelerated timetable has emerged, according to sources familiar with the process. High-ranking Big Ten representatives will meet Sunday afternoon in Washington D.C. to discuss expansion. The timing and location of the session make sense considering the Association of American Universities is holding its semi-annual meetings in D.C. from Sunday-Tuesday, and all 11 Big Ten schools are AAU members. The thinking among those in touch with Big Ten officials is that the league is likely to add at least three schools -- to end up with a 14- or 16-team league. "I don't think 16 is scaring anyone off, as long as you can find that many (five) that are a good enough fit," said one source who has been consulted during the conference's exploratory phase. "They're looking long-term, across the horizon. What gives them the best shot at keeping value at a high level?" By joining the Big Ten, the Irish could increase their annual TV revenue from roughly $12 million to $22 million per year, get a national TV platform (the Big Ten Network) for its top-notch Olympic sports and decrease travel costs for its teams. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/04/big-ten-reps-to-talk-expansion-in-dc-on-sunday.html
April 19, 201016 yr This is going to be interesting.... Looks like the Big East may get blown up by this football wise....and the reverberating effects will lead to further expansion leaving only 5 major conferences for football. SEC Big 10 Big 12 PAC 10 ACC Will be interesting.
April 20, 201016 yr Louisville is on the outside looking in with all this and it isn't pretty. That's a lot of money spent building a new stadium expansion just to have our conference run out on us. All of us Louisville fans need to get ready because no matter how this happens, it probably isn't going to be good for us. It's time to get to church, pull out those rosary beads and start lighting the votive candles; pray that Notre Dame joins the Big10 before they pluck one or more of ours.
April 20, 201016 yr U of L could easily be absorbed by the ACC and IMO seems like a natural fit for them. That said, the Big East should get very proactive, and try to get VPI, Miami, and BC back. I certainly feel they could do so with VPI and BC.
April 20, 201016 yr The Big East will lose a couple of teams if the Big 10 goes after a few BE teams. I foresee the BE as a basketball only conference after all the bloodletting.
April 20, 201016 yr Someone explain to me how you would take Rutgers over Louisville if you are the Big 10 higher ups? I cannot see one good reason.
April 20, 201016 yr Someone explain to me how you would take Rutgers over Louisville if you are the Big 10 higher ups? I cannot see one good reason. The market.
April 20, 201016 yr According to Colin Cowherd it's going to be UConn to the Big Ten, Colorado and Utah to the Pac 10....
April 20, 201016 yr I foresee the BE as a basketball only conference after all the bloodletting. This has been mentions numerous times since the Big East went to 16 teams. Something like half of the schools are Catholic institutions without Division I football, correct? Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, DePaul, Marquette, and then Notre Dame if they don't make a football move. The new "Big East" could maybe add Dayton, Xavier, St. Joseph's, Saint Louis, etc. and make for a really good basketball league, even though they wouldn't have the big football paydays of the past.
April 20, 201016 yr Someone explain to me how you would take Rutgers over Louisville if you are the Big 10 higher ups? I cannot see one good reason. Seriously? What would be the reason to take UL over Rutgers?
April 20, 201016 yr Louisville and Cincinnati are going to have to really do some politicking once this all breaks. Being in local small markets is not going to be attractive...

I certainly feel they could do so with VPI and BC. Don't see that happening...Syracuse would now jump to ACC, dont forget the ACC ent hard for Syracuse before expansion. I think the Big East as a football conference is on their last legs.
