What does everyone think of this? I do not agree with it. I believe if there is a middle school student who is capable of excelling at a high school sport then why not let them.

It can't happen in football or soccer anyways, so why not include all the other sports as well. They can play AAU, go to camps, even come and practice, but until they are freshman, they shouldn't be allowed to play in any games. Maybe this will keep these kids from being held back for 2 or 3 years. I can see doing it 1 year, but some of these parents are taking it way to far "HOPING" that their kid grows and develops into the next Lebron or something. Ridiculous. Let them stay and play gradeschool ball until it's their turn.

If someone is good enough to compete why not let them play up? Its really a bigger deal in girls sports. Girls mature quicker and are often very capable of competing in high school sports. I don't think students should be deprived of this opportunity if they are good enough.

County school boards are permitted to regulate their athletics as they see fit as long as it doesn't violate KHSAA regulations (eg. they cannot rule a kid eligible and let them play if the KHSAA has ruled them ineligible, etc). They would not win a lawsuit IMHO, because the student athletes in question are not even students at the HS they are wanting to play for.

 

It is just like grades. County's can have more stringent requirements that the KHSAA for eligibility, etc. The key is that participating in school athletics is not a right but a privilege.

Not sure about that as the softball lawsuit/political push was based on the loss of potential scholarships.

 

There are numerous top finishers in the state tournament as well as winning state tournaments by middle school students.

 

The argument could be made that they are losing out on exposure/experience by them not being allowed to compete against in the state tournament as other middle schoolers in other districts are allowed.

 

Also, remember that KY education was changed via lawsuit because students in one district was seen as receiving a better education than a student in another KY district.

 

A good lawyer could push a similar argument ESPECIALLY in those sports that opportunities are majorly different for middle school athletes in other districts.

 

Golf would be a good example. How is Jefferson County going to set up a golf league that gives a MSer the same experience that they could have playing varsity and in the state tournament?

Not real familiar with Jefferson County, but did this happen a lot? It seems like I remember it more on the girls basketball side than the boys basketball side. Can someone fill me in...

My feeling is that we should focus on and recognize young people at the level they are currently at.... STOP RUSHING TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

 

Examples:

 

-Folks hyping middle school kids for playing a high school sport

-Folks (on this website) being critical of Ky High School All Stars because "they won't be playing major college basketball"

-Folks criticising the Duke-Butler championship game "because neither team has an NBA lottery pick"

 

Let's let young people slow down, relax and enjoy the moment. Quit pushing so hard for the "next level".

You make good points, but at the same time if a kid is good enough why hold them back? How awful would it have been if OJ Mayo played middle school basketball as an 8th grader. It would not have been fair at all. My theory like in basketball is that if you move a kid up he needs to be a great player that is basically a can't miss high school guy. I just can't see not letting anyone who is in middle school play HS sports in middle school.
