Why Is Fighting Allowed In Hockey ?

Featured Replies

I'm in no way against it, I'm just curious.

Why is hockey the only sport where taking off the gloves and throwing down for a minute or so is acceptable ?

Personally, I'd like to see it in all sports.

I love hockey, but that's the one aspect of the sport I can't stand. It would be OK, if there was really enforcement going on, but a lot of times they look staged and somewhat silly. They've got razors on their shoes and a weapon in their hands, and they fist fight? They can't be that mad, then. I've seen more players carried off the ice for a hard check into the boards than I have a fight.

People don't fight to kill in every single fight.

Sometimes when you play someone in a rough sport, every once in a while you want to punch the other one in the face. Punching someone in the face and stabbing someone with a skate are very different things .

I have no problem with the fighting.

You make it sound like they should dip their hands glue and then broken glass during a hockey fight

Now you're talkin'. I'd like it then. :sssh: :p :isurrender:

Listen, I don't want them to kill each other, but at the same time, if they're going to fight, fight. Too many of these things look like two girls slapping at each other. There is an occasional busted tooth or black eye (mostly from doing a header to the ice), an ejection now and then, but for the most part both participants are unhurt, get a 5 minute major, and nothing gets solved. It's a waste of time.

If I want to go see a fight, I'll go to a UFC or MMA event. Now that's fighting.

However, if I'm plunking down $45 to see a hockey match, I want to see hockey. Real enforcement goes on when somebody on team A goes after team B's star, and team B's enforcer takes out team A's offender with, a rough take down, an overt check, or a high stick. That's hockey.

I'll admit, I don't like it when they just hug each other and then fall down. I like when the gloves come off and they pound each other a little.

Just the origin of the sport..

Curious then, as to why it's not seen in the Olympics. Seems to be a much "cleaner" game there...and in my opinion, a much more enjoyable game.

They go by international rules...

You know how those French are..."I give you such a slap"!

The french canadians are very crafty with their sticks... not just in a shooting way.

I kind of roughly equate it to how intentionally hitting a guy with a pitch in baseball is allowed to a point. Fighting in hockey is all about policing themselves and enforcing the unwritten rules of the game. For instance if you go after a team's star, you can bet the other team's enforcer is going to drop gloves with you and let you know you don't do that.

Yeah, I know. I guess that was my point. If we, as Americans, can enjoy Olympic hockey so much WITHOUT the fighting...why do we need it in the NHL?

I don't have a problem with the physicality of the sport...it's just like football or shoot, even rugby...but, as long as the action is within the flow of the play (and obviously not kill or seriously injure the other player). To stop, drop gloves, grab hold of the other guy and try to land as many haymakers while he does the same to you, is just stupid in my opion.

And as to the baseball analogy, yeah you usually see the other team's star get a brushback pitch (or even hit) if their pitcher hit your team's star. But, again it's done in the flow of the game. You don't see someone tackle the pitcher when he's coming off the field.

We Americans are all about violence... 1/4th of the crowd attends hockey games to watch fights  North American hockey is just as good if not better, when it comes to playoff time people rarely fight it's all about the game.
