When I read the story about Clark County leaving the runner-up trophy and Zollo leaving his jersey, I for one was very happy? proud?:idunno: Runner up trophies may be alright for your All A schools of the world but is not exceptable for the Clark County's, especially as many times as it is happening to them. That being said they are still not doing the necessary things to beat Mason County, like using their size as a strength and getting in better shape, which I harped on after they got beat last year in the 4th quarter.:deadhorse: They once again looked winded in the 4th quarter this year, guess it is easier to stand on the perimeter instead of packing a lunch and going to work down under, but a lot of that is on the Coach, who may need to attend some camps of his own this summer. Now back to the trophy, lets hope Clark County's AD don't pull a 'Jim Bunning' and back down and except it and apologize,etc. If Mason County fans think this is unsportsmanlike, ask their superintendent, vice principal or whatever you call him how many times he actually broke or didn't except second place trophies when he was coaching his son in elementary and AAU.:sssh::thumb:

You never know what might have went on in that locker room after the game. I know of a coach that when the team finished runner-up in a Christmas tourney the team accepted the runner up trophy. On the bus ride home the coach felt the attitude of his team was that they were happy with the runner up trophy. He took this trophy, opened the bus door, and tossed it out of the bus and preceeded to explain the difference netween the two positions, winner and runner up. That team proceeded on to the championship game of the Sweet 16.

I'm not getting in the middle of this one, but I have a question: Why can't the student sections be assigned to the areas behind their own benches? Wouldn't that take care of some of this?:confused:

 

I also posted this idea in the Concessions thread, but thought it might be appropriate here also.

 

I suggest putting the cheerleaders and student sections on either end of the gym. The students sections would be behind the cheerleaders. I understand the stage section would be less desirable than the the other end, but I still believe it would be better than the current situation. (I know the argument that stage isn't used for every game, but for the tournament it should used)

 

The areas behind the benches would be for fans of each team (hopefully adults, parents, etc) Obviously those seats close to the bench don't offer as good a view, so the only reason for sitting there is to taunt the team or offer support to the team.

 

Basically you would be dividing the gym in half at mid court.

 

Again, I don't know who constitutes the "Mason Faithful" that won't change seats for the tournament - so I can't address where they would go.

 

I believe there is a solution to this that will satisfy more people than the current situation. You have to think outside the box. It is easy to do the "same old thing" unless you make an effort to make improvements.

 

There are several possibilities for great matchups in the 10th region and every team should have a good experience. Let's make it more "collegiate" and less "amateur heckling". Give the students a chance to support their teams in an organized way.

 

And lastly, let the AD at Mason know some of the concerns. I don't know if he reads this or not, but he can't fix it if he doesn't know it is a problem. Don't assume he knows.

I never knew a high school kid forgetting his basketball jersey in an away locker room was big news... :idunno:

That jersey story belongs on a topix page not in a "real" newspaper. The trophy should not have been left on purpose, if it was. The jersey probably was an accident. But is that really all the Ledger had to work with for that day. Surely the library board met or signups for soccer are coming.

I know for a fact that the MC team trainer washed that jersey today so that it could be returned. I was also told that Fred Hester was taking the trophy to Winchester. I guess these are just other examples of poor administration and sportsmanship. :isurrender:

 

Oh and by the way, it sure was a joy to sit and watch that perfect student section from Clark County. If only everyone could be so wonderful. Oh well, there is always next year and maybe we won't cancel the regular season game and I'll get to go see them at home. :lol:

 

A couple of years ago, during the Mason vs. Clark game in Winchester, a GRC Student hit Russ Middleton with a piece of ice while he was shooting a foul shot late in the game. If the Mason student section actually did these things that they are accused of,then it is totally wrong. But if you live in a glass house, you should not cast stones. If they would have put the GRC student section directly behind the Mason bench, I am sure it would have been no different.

 

I will say one thing, thou. As a Mason fan, if we were considered the visiting team on the scoreboard, then our fan base should have had to sit on the opposite side of the Fieldhouse. I would have had no problem with doing that, especially since I am an old Maysville Bulldog who was used to sitting on that side of the floor, lol.

 

Finally, guys. These are high school students we are talking about. They are going to do immature things. They are kids. What is more immature is us adults arguing over these mundane issues on a blog site. The game is over. Mason won, Clark lost. That is sports. See ya next year. Bring on North Hardin.

I especially loved the Winchester Sun article that called the game, Quote "The Maysville Miracle". They made it sound like the victory was a total fluke and that Mason had just knocked off the 6 or 7 time defending State Champions. Maybe it was the Washington Generals of Maysville finally knocking of the Harlem Globetrotters of Winchester for the first time since 1971. Great stuff.
