Frat kids tell me stories of them being tied up and forced to drink whatever they put in their mouths. That sounds like forcing to drink to me. One story was during one week a frat goes around and literally captures one of their pledges if they see them, and blindfold them, and tie them up and get the really drunk and leave them out in the middle of no where with no money, no cell phone, and no clothes. Sounds like a crappy time to me.

#2- I hate when Frat guys get defensive. Frats have a negative stereotype with some people and I think you just have to let it go. Ain't no sense in arguing over it. You as a Frat guy know what actually goes on in your group and those who are slamming it can't speak for every frat obviously.

On this point, although I'm obviously not a frat guy...I defend the fraternities and sororities, because being a member of such an organization is much more than most people think. And, on a personal note, when someone accuses all greeks of being followers, being drunks, promoting bad behavior, then they are accusing my son, for instance. I think that some stuff can be let go. But I also think the fraternities would do themselves a disservice if they did. They are not a secret organization, immune to what other people's perceptions are of them. They live, work and mingle with the non-fraternity world, and perception is reality.

 

I don't understand the negativity toward joining a fraternity at all. As an adult, in the work world, many of us join indistry related organizations. Other than living with other members, what's the difference? And would anyone accuse a PTA member, or a Teachers Organization member or an Elks Club member of a lack of independence?

^^^ Frat guys are cliquey at Kentucky. You rarely see a frat guy "mingling" with the non-fraternity world, which is fine with me because 80% of them are too arrogant for my taste.

I know what you mean, it's like just because they can walk around with SAE or JOB or whatever else kind of Greek letter on their shirt with their clever little sayings underneath, everyone else is supposed to be impressed by it. I wish I could be.

There was nothing like that in the Kentucky Gamma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. I can't speak for others.

We can debate the pros and cons of being in a Greek organization all day long. Many people benefit from it, many people do not. I feel many people would have benefited from it that never give it a shot, but to each their own. For 99% of fraternities and sororities, the horror stories of cruel hazing rituals supersedes what actually takes place. Most of it is folklore to sound a lot more scary than it really is. The fear of the unknown is part of every organization's mystique.

I don't have a problem in the world with Frats, and I know why they get so mad when people talk trash about them because it's negative stereotyping. But, it's one of those issues that some people are never going to change their minds about so there is no use in trying to argue it IMO.

I'm glad I'm not impressed by it because I'd probably join a frat if I was. I'd rather not be like frat guys these days to be frank. Sorry if that offends anyone but they aren't my type of people.

I guess my only comment would be that to judge all people by the bad apples in any group isn't very fair.
