The rulebook is very clear as to what situation an official can confer with the timer. The FC last second shot case is not one of them.

Timer or scorer? What is the rule btw?

I really don't know the rule but I know I was asked if a last second shot was good or not. I was always told the Official Scorer was part of the crew and can be asked to help anytime help is needed.

The only time an official can consult with the timekeeper is if the horn doesn't go off at 0:00 OR if the noise is so loud in the gym that the officials didn't hear it and a basket was made or a foul was called. The referee can then ask the timekeeper if the basket or foul happened before or after the clock hit 0:00.

So , a)it doesn't apply in the FC game since the light on the backboard went off and the official recognized the horn and b)the official that asked sumoroyal if a basket was good or not erred in asking. Its now allowed unless one of the two conditions I listed happened.

Horns and lights. Been around too many HS events where the clocks don't be function properly, lights out, etc etc. although it happens more for outside events than basketball. I must say, I have not seen a HS BB game without a clock.

Now, who tests these reliable horns, buzzers and lights? How do you know they are calibrated and timed to go off properl? I have never seen a HS coach, administrator, or referree test these systems before a game or during the setup for a game.

No matter what you do, there can be errors. The only way instant replay can work is if the official clock is shown inside the screen. And since ESPN or CBS isn't there I assume we will stay with us humnas trying to figure it out.

Although, the yellow first down line in FB would be SWEET

That's not the point.

So the coach of the "winning" team walks over to the other coach and says "Coach, that ball was obviously in before the buzzer so you guys win." Do you then expect the other coach to say "While I appreciate the gesture, my guy actually traveled on the play when we started the play near mid-court but it wasn't called so you guys go ahead and keep the victory."

Is the travel somehow less important than the made basket? Had the travel been called we would never have gotten to this discussion.

I looked at this several times in slow motion. If the guy starting the play traveled...it would have been his right foot, and it would have been difficult to get a piece of paper under his foot before he dribbled. Someone is looking for something not there just to offset an easily identifiable bad call.

How many free throws did FC miss?

Did the refs blatently miss the last call?????

Again, timer or scorer? I, too, have been told by officials that the official scorer is an official of the game and can be called upon to confirm certain aspects of the game. I have never heard this for the official timer.

Look, you're entitled to your opinion. However, the vast majority of refs who know the rules know that was a travel.

Why would I be looking to "offset" anything? Heck, I've added a 2nd missed call.

The travel is much more of a judgement call than this buzzer beater call.

That doesn't change the fact that it was a travel.

The official can go to the timer IF the timer says the clock malfunctioned or the horn didn't go off.

Neither the timekeeper or scorer are considered to be officials.

I'm not sure which play your even talking about on the travel. I

really think you are reaching here to try and defend these officials. The play I think your talking about....you have got to be kidding me.

The buzzer beater call???? Let me see....ball at it's apex...light off.....light comes on....ball goes in the basket. This call was a no brainer. It was blown, there is no justification or excuse in my opinion.

Ok just looked at the lady sequence one more time. IMO there was not a travel on the play. I just don't see it.

Wow somebody makes a simple point and people sign on ( 5 post) to try and make a mountain out of a mole hill. I haven't gone back and reread every post but I don't believe Clyde ever said they didn't miss the last second shot. He pointed out, correctly so, that there was a travel by the point guard at the beginning of the play that was missed. If that had been called the whole ending to the game would have been a mute point. :thumb:
