Someone break down the game winning play for me. Was it designed that way or did Gabbard just make a play?

 

If I had to guess, it was designed that way with Gabbard having the option. He took the inbounce pass near half court by the scorer's table with about 7.7 left. He drove hard to the left and pulled up at the left elbow. Cotton was about halfway between the paint and the sideline, and when Gabbard raised up, he cut hard to the goal. Everyone on NCC was watching Gabbard as Cotton caught the pass and laid it in with 3 seconds left. It was a very nice play.

:thumb: As the saying goes, third time is the charm. McQueary called 3 timeouts over the last 48 seconds trying to find a play that worked. And that one definitely worked. A very nice play.

The first half of this game saw some well played basketball. The second half was ugly. Boone just fundamentally broke down with turnover after turnover. I would guess they had twice as many turnovers as shots in the third quarter. NCC used their scouting report, overplayed the passing lanes and Boone couldn't even get a play started from the top without turning the ball over. As others have mentioned, how you can not get the ball on the block to 6'5" Montgomery being guarded by 5'7" Pangallo (with 3 fouls the whole second half) is beyond me.

 

I guess we can say it was great defense by both teams. NCC overplayed their man defense and got steal after steal as Boone forgot you are supposed to come meet the pass. On the other side, Boone's size seemed to really mess with NCC's shooters and Cotton did a great job on Pangallo in the first half. In the second half, Boone played a matchup zone and NCC never got clean looks and never seemed comfortable taking shots.

 

One final comment. Geisler is a beast. I have to believe he is going to get some D1 interest. He has size, strength, athleticism and skill.

It's so funny how this score was 41-40 and everyone talks about what a great game it was and CovCath wins 40-39 in 2OT and everyone says it set basketball back decades. Ryle scored 46 and Dixie scored 39.

 

I'll give ya that the Colonels started the game looking fairly impressive like a team that belonged in the post season, but when they lapsed into their signature vacuum of not being able to buy a basket or a free throw, possession after possession, I couldn't decide whether it was frustrating to watch or just downright dull, or a bit of both. Sure it went into Double OT, but that just added to the frustration of wondering how on earth they could possibly let this game come to this. I give Cru credit for scrapping back, but comes a point where the Colonels need to lay down the hammer and make some 'for sure' buckets to keep the game out of reach. It started smelling of so many other games this season, (Beechwood game comes to mind), where they let them hang around and had to settle it in overtime. Kudos to the Colonels for pulling games like these out, but to let them get to such a nail biting ending seems so unnecessary. They really need to finish stronger than that. Still, they made it to the Semi's and ya gotta love that considering no one thought they'd make it that far this year.

 

On the other hand, however low scoring and frustrating it was to see the Breds struggle from 3 point land when ordinarily they excel there, the Boone/NewCath game was like night and day on the 'interesting meter' compared to the CCH/St. Henry game. Boone's level of play and Earl's confident shooting was a thing of beauty. NewCath's disciplined comeback and their turning up the 'D' was impressive on their way to closing the gap to briefly taking the lead. Meyer's time and again steals where jaw dropping amazing, Geisler showed awesome strength, Hightchew made some extremely key buckets late, and Boone's solid and certain effort to finish the game was executed and played out like a thing of champions. It wasn't the perfect game and there remains great speculation as to why NewCath didn't foul when they could've made many scratch their heads, but ultimately there were two teams out there on the court playing their guts out with both showing that they were worthy of advancing to the Semi's. Sadly, only one could. But in the case of these two teams, they both were solidly deserving.

 

I hope the Colonels can sway my thoughts in their upcoming battle with Newport, and depending on which Wildcat team shows up, it could play out to be interesting or the Colonels could end up just flat out embarrassing themselves. I hope it's not the latter. Historically CCH is no stepchild team and they typically make a good showing in the Regional tournament, which they make 19 out of every 20 years. Still, I gotta hand it to them. Here they are in the Semi's once again with an unbelievable chance to be still alive for the Finals. Really, who would've thunk it with this style of frustrating play? If it comes to be, the saying 'Truth is stranger than fiction' will take on exceptional meaning.

The 9th seems to be the lowest scoring region in the state. Playing at BOK arena with its strobe light effect billboards flashing light off the court may be effecting the 3's.(though not for Holmes tonight) Does Rupp have flashing lights shinning on their court?

Sorry you won't be sitting by Boone any more. We really care about our boys and want them to do their best. And if you ask any one that mother did that all season long. She comes outs and supports her son because he loves to play. So sorry for your luck that you didn't like sitting by US. And I'm sure she really don't care what anyone thinks, and did'nt run anyone off.:banana:

 

There is a difference between supporting your son (team) and getting vocal while doing it is okay. But, when the other team is taking a shot (every shot they took) and she yells "ahhhhhhhhhhhh" then that would border on unsportsmanlike on the fan, if there were such a thing. To each their own, it's a big gym and plenty of seats so I don't mind moving to another section, along with the other 6 guys that left around me.

 

It was a good game to watch as a casual fan.

This was an entertaining game. I was very impressed with Sean Meyer tonight and Jake Geisler. From the Boone side, I thought Earls looked good and then bad in that order. Both teams wanted this win very bad and you could tell by the amount of huslte and hard play.

 

5 Things: And to prove Im not biased towards either team, I can tell you before the game I actually asked "is it possible both teams can lose???"

 

1) 0-10???? I think it was more like 0-13 or so. Heck he shot 3 3's and missed all 3 in about 8 seconds.

 

2) The 3pt shooting in the tourn (outside of Newports #22) has been awful. This has to be for 2 reason in my opinion. a)Players getting used to the scenery and depth percetption. b)I have maybe seen 1 or 2 guys the entire tournament actually shoot from the HS 3pt line. Every shooter is shooting from the college line or even further out.

 

3) HJA, The lady you sat behind tonight has to be the same lady I sat behind last year. The entire game she spent yelling and I mean really yelling at the officials, Boone's coaches, and even at times opposing players. It was awufl.

 

4) With that said. The lady I complained about couldn't have complained more than NCC coaches. Truthfully, I thought this game was the best officiated game of the tournament so far. I think the 16th region refs have done a really good job. And NCC was whinning about every single call or no call. That block by Cotton was not a goal tend. A fabulous play by a very athletic player.

 

5) Not only was the complaining bad. The coaching was just about as bad. With a 1pt lead and about 1min left, why was NCC even trying to move the ball inside or enter the 3pt cirlce. They had fouls to give and Boone had to fould twice just to get NCC into the bonus and shooting freethrows. Then they don't foul with 7sec left and a foul to give on the defensive end. Not to even mention that Boone was having fits with Geisler on the inside. Not many plays were drawn up for the big man on the post. Instead they just continued to jack up 3's. I think Pangallo plays really hard, and at times is a very good point guard. But over the 3yrs I've seen him on varsity. I would never think of him as a consistant 3pt threat. But he just kept shooting.

 

Your point number 2 is incorrect Holmes shot lights out last night, but number 5 i agree with totally do not know why number 13 (Highchew i think) took that shot at the end they didn't need it, even thou he shook off Gabbard, Earls step in and made him change his shot.

Shawn Meyers had a great game last night pllayed very hard okn both ends of the floor, I agree with an earlier poster. Why didn't he shoot more??????

I sat there in amazement over NCC shooting all those 3's when they didn't need to. Their center is 6'7" and 240 lbs. and can score.

Missed this game last night. My question is why did NCC shoot so many 3's if Giesler was unstoppable inside? Were they coming from inside out? Three district runner ups are in the semifinals with Holmes. Glad to hear Shaun Meyer had a good game. He is a warrior.

 

Breds lose quite a bit this year dont they? Congratulations to the Rebels and good luck Saturday against Holmes.

NCC has lived by the adage live by the three die by the three all year so really no surprise that they keep on jacking it up even when they are not falling. As good as Pangallo is it seemed to me that the ball should have went inside to Giesler as the first option all year. He is the most polished big in N Ky as far as passing out of the post and I think he would have created better shooting opportunities for the guards.

Amen! I believe Boone 'looked' inside once with this matchup and then rotated the ball around the key. The first 5 times down the court in the second half, I would have exploited this matchup (especially with Pangallo having 3 fouls.) even if you have to force the ball inside to Montgomery. I thought the more the game went on the sloppier Boone played. Thank goodness the game wasn't 2 minutes longer!!!

 

Giesler is a beast. It looked at times that Boone had no idea where he was on the court when NCC had the ball. There were times he was WIDE open. Once he got the ball down low (or even at the free throw line), he was extremely hard to stop. He is a very good, strong player! In my opinion, definitely a D1 prospect.

 

If someone would have told me that Cooper Downs (3 big free throws) and McQuery (3 pointer) individually would have outscored Brown (0 points) and Montgomery (2 points) combined, I would have said no way Boone wins this game!! Montgomery did have a bunch of rebounds (I would guess 8 - 10).

I'm going to miss Grant Pangallo. I first saw him as a 6th grader in our St. Pius David Moorhead tournament. I remember thinking then that the kid was going to be special. Man did he achieve even more than I thought he would. Don't let this game define you Grant. One game does not a career make. Sometimes the shots just don't fall in that arena. We've been on the air since 2004/2005 and you're the most electrifying point guard I've seen.

 

First time I saw the kid was as a freshman and my first thought was "overmatched." Could not have been more wrong. Great NKY high school player.

Yeah, it reminded me of watching Monica Seles play tennis. At some point you just have to turn on your "man ears" and block it out like her son probably does on the court.
