Qryche11 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Final in 9th Region Boone Co jumped out to a 31-21 halftime lead but NCC fought back with several spectacular defensive plays. Geisler did a lot of scoring and rebounding and Meyer was thieving passes all night long. The Rebels though made the big shot in the end with 3 seconds left. Gabbard drives the paint and draws the defense. He dishes to Ronald Cotton who lays it in for an easy duece. Pangallo takes it the length of the court with 2 seconds left but can only throw up an off balance 3pter that banks off the glass no good.
Walter Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Boone was held to just 10 points in the second half. Geisler led Newcath with 15 and Meyer chipped in with 14.
Golf24 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 It was NCC's phenomenol 2nd half defense that tightened the game up. Boone had a hard time doing anything offensiveley in the 2nd half. However, had NCC shot better than 10% (rough estimate) from behind the arc, this game may not have been as close.
Golf24 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 But give credit to Boone. They made the big play when they needed it
StraightShooter Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Those who talked about NC living and dying by the 3 were right. What a difference a week makes when you look at the high NC was on after drubbing HHS and Newport. A very poised move by Gabbard with the dish and Ronald with the finish. Congrats to Boone on coming back after the disappointing loss to Ryle. Best of luck vs. Holmes.
RomanEmpire Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Big coaching gaffe at the end by NCC imo. Scoreboard showed both teams with 5 fouls. Boone inbounds the ball, drives and dishes to Cotton for the easy lay in. Why NCC didn't foul Gabbard before he passed was a head scratcher. I always foul when I have one to give in that situation, I think any coach does, doesn't he?? Great game. If Pangallo is on, then NCC whens big, but Boone did a nice job of putting the bigger, more athletic Cotton on him most of the night. I predict Boone struggles with Holmes unless they play stall ball again.

The previous posession they fouled on purpose but then after Cotton made the layup Coach Brannen signaled to his team like why didn't they foul. Boone ran a good play though; great pass by Gabbard.
Solomon Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Gawd....I have never seen Pangallo shoot that bad..I feel bad for the kid.
Theoldguy Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Why with 7.7 seconds left in the game why didn't NCC use their last foul as they had one to give. Then again Boone also had a foul to give and didn't try to foul Grant Pangallo as he dribbled down the floor! Grant didn't have his shot tonight as if he had, NCC would have won easily. While both teams shot better than what CovCath/St. Henry did, it was funny how much the NCC vs Boone County game and the CovCath vs St. Henry were alike! One team got a large lead and lost it, only to have the other team miss the last shot of the game to win or lose the game. Boone County will now play Cov Holmes on Saturday March 6th @ the BOKC at 7:30pm Think about this Basketball fans: There is only one team left in the Ninth Region Tournament that won their District! Cov Holmes is the only District winner to win and advance in the 9th Region, while District losers Newport, CovCath and Boone County win their first round games and advance to the 9th Region semi-finals! Finally the crowd even if there were very few and I mean very few students from Holmes, Dixie and Boone County, was the largest crowd I have seen at the BOKC sans for the 9th/10th Regional Finals. Congrats to the Breds for bringing their students out to the game!
hja1224 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Pangallo must have missed 10 three pointers tonight. This is the first time seeing NCC play and I would describe them as "scrappy". They played tough and hard all night. Boone came out focused to start the game and hardly missed a shot. The second half they almost seemed like the game was over and had many sloppy passes and turnovers. On a side note. I won't sit with the Boone section anymore as one of the parents of a Boone player (mother of a Senior, I'm told) screamed the entire game every time NCC took a shot. She is probably a very nice lady but she ran off about 15 folks sitting near her. Everyone just glared at her and laughed but she either didn't mind or was clueless. Great game to watch and looking forward to Saturday night.
Sweeperboy Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I saw the game. Congrats to Boone on a very nice win. I was a little disappointed that Shawn Meyer didnt take more shots in the 2nd half. This kid was on fire both defensively and mentally. He had to have had 8 or 10 steals. This is where his points came from. But when a h.s. kid is as focused as he was I would have rode him to a victory. It was just not Pangallo's nite shooting. He has some nice looks in the second half but they just wouldnt fall. Boone was definatley daring the other NCC kids to take some outside shots but it just didnt happen. Looks like just one Private left now. 20n10
CovCathiRadio Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 It's so funny how this score was 41-40 and everyone talks about what a great game it was and CovCath wins 40-39 in 2OT and everyone says it set basketball back decades. Ryle scored 46 and Dixie scored 39.

CovCathiRadio Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I'm going to miss Grant Pangallo. I first saw him as a 6th grader in our St. Pius David Moorhead tournament. I remember thinking then that the kid was going to be special. Man did he achieve even more than I thought he would. Don't let this game define you Grant. One game does not a career make. Sometimes the shots just don't fall in that arena. We've been on the air since 2004/2005 and you're the most electrifying point guard I've seen.
Qryche11 Posted March 5, 2010 Author Posted March 5, 2010 I was sitting next to the NCC bench and Coach Jimmy Pangallo specifically told them that they had one foul to give but you all have to remember that the coaches can tell them what to do but they are 17 yr old kids. Gabbard did a nice job of not zig zagging out front and taking it right to the paint to avoid a reach in foul. I still though the NCC defender could have tied him up and make them take it out again wiht 4 seconds but it didnt happen. Gabbard is so quick with the ball that he got rid of it. Gabbard struggled tonight with turnovers and Boone Co realy didnt play focused in the 2nd half. Great season by NCC to pull off some nice wins and finish the season on their 13-2 run losing only to Holmes and Boone Co in that stretch. They lost to the defending State Champs by 3 and Boone Co by 1 tonight. With Geisler and Hightchew returning I would expect them to have a nice inside/out game and contend once again for the District title. Geisler will be the best Big Man in NKY next year, mark it down. He rebounds better than anyone I have seen play the game in a long long time.
