I said it was my opinion. I think experience is a joke. There are a ton of great coaches that had to get a start somewhere. Grant County isn't going to send a bunch of kids to play college basketball or compete for regional titles every year. They have one gym. Their gym time is shared. It just makes sense to me to hire a guy who is qualified who is already there. Are there even openings for teaching jobs at the high school for the other candidates?

I understand what you are saying...but, I don't necessarily think these two are always tied at the hip.

You're not getting the point. Utter did have a chance. Its up to the administration to decide on whether or not he did a good enough job.

He was coach of the year last year and that is voted on by his peers in the 8th region. So it is hard obviously to please people at Grant. When Coach Kinmon took an administration position at the school almost 5 months ago, it would have been nice to at least have some coaches in mind by the state tournament and a hire made by now. Almost all of the other schools have made their hires. It makes coaches that might have had interest in the job maybe pull their name and wonder what the administration is after. Young coaches must be given a shot at some point. I guess the coach at Butler was to young this year?

Maybe they are looking for someone with more experience or who has a better knowledge of the game than the current interim.

 

The current interim has 7 years teaching and coaching experience. 3 years coaching middle school in Shelby County and 4 years Jv/assistant at Grant.

Utter has the credentials as far as years, but qualification goes beyond your years in.

 

As for you saying they won't win big.......Like someone said earlier in the post, you got to get to the feeder system, once you get there, everything else will hopefully fall into place and then you will have a chance to win big. They're contenders for the District Championship every year. In a few years they will be contenders for the region, especially with class of 2012.

Thats not fair to say the parents were upset. 2009 season they were very pleased, Most parents and fans in the program thought he did an exceptional job. I know I did and I will miss him in our program.

 

But the fact of the matter is, there are other coaches that are interested that may be a better fit. From what I heard, Jimbob Hicks and Tim Fraley (sp?) and Joe Utter are the top contenders. I hope they choose the best for the sake of the program. The kids deserve nothing less.

What?

I think too many people are looking (mistakenly) at Joe Utter as a Ron Kinmon clone. They'll use the reasoning that since he was on already on staff, they already know everything that he's likely to do.

 

Fact is, Joe Utter was probably a "good soldier" and did what he was told do (and most likely, in the way he was told to). Sure, he probably had some input, but ultimately every decision that was made, was signed off by Kinmon. (After all, it was his "neck" that was on the line, right?)

 

And anybody that says he's already had a chance at Grant County, is just as mistaken. Taking over in mid-season is by no means an effective way to measure someone's "success". As has already been posted, Utter was in a no-win situation. If they win, it's because of all the work done by Kinmon. If they lose, then it's because of Utter inability to coach. Fact is, the only thing you can really take out of this past half year is how Utter was able to handle the kids. The X's and O's and other organizational situations were already in place when he was handed the reins. Only a fool would institute drastic changes and expect instant results.

 

In the end, he may or may not be the best man for the job. But to ultimately dismiss him from consideration because of these two foolish assumptions would be ridiculous IMO.
