SSC...Care to reveal who the group is? I don't believe that there is a group or there's anyone being unrealistic with expectations. Nobody has demanded that a coach come in and win 20 plus games for three years or you're fired! I've stated before that the program has to rebuild at the lower levels and last time I counted, there's 4 elementary gyms available for that. The problem starts at the middle school and high school, which only has one gym per location. Yes, this is a huge problem and everyone knows that. With the money crunch that's going on statewide, I can't imagine another gym or complex being built for any of the athletics in GC within the next 5 years. And that's probably a wish for it to occur unless the teachers and administration want to reduce their salaries by X% to fund it. Doesn't that sound like a good idea? As for Dave Henley, he's probably had a couple of state championship teams that have just walked the halls and never set foot on a basketball floor. Most teams that he's had in the past really didn't need a coach, (this isn't a knock towards Coach either, he is a great person and one of the best to every coach the game), they just needed some guidance and fatherly advice. IMO, he's made a great career move in going to North Oldham! Grant Co has talent that is just walking the halls and if some of these kids would participate, I guarantee they'll be a regional participant every year!! Regardless of how you perceive the program, let the cheerleaders continue to RAH! RAH! and then let the administration find the right coach - although money helps, it doesn't buy accomplishments or championship :thumb:

 

You were the first person to bring the group in. I just said their expectations are too high. Grant County should probably understand they will not compete for the regional championship every year the way the district and region is currently set up. A fantastic goal for them every year is to make the final 4 of the region. I don't think that changes in the next 5 years no matter who is named the coach. Their money shortage makes it seem to me that they need to understand they are up against it a little. If they are serious about competing for district and regional titles there needs to be changes made. If all of that happens I still don't know that they would compete for regional titles.

It matters to a point. Like dribbledrive11 said, you have kids roaming the halls that have the height and talent to play but forever reason they choose not to play. These kids need to be pursued.

 

Your last sentence is exactly what we're trying to change. That is why we are taking the time to make sure we have the best coach possible.

 

If it mattered all that much wouldn't the school w/ the most kids win the most titles? Wouldn't the top 5 biggest always make the state finals? Why would there be a private/public debate if the biggest schools won every title. Every school has good athletes that don't play basketball. I doubt it's exclusively a Grant County problem even in their own district.

Say what you will about Ron Kinmon, but he was never one to "under schedule". In fact, he probably could've put a few more wins on the board if they hadn't "over scheduled" so much over the years.

 

Agree..nothing negative should have ever be said about Coach Kinmon and he was a positive influence on the players, 99.99%. Besides, his hands were tied for many years with an individual who is no longer there...he had no support or resources. He loved basketball but, I'm sure he likes his new job too!!

 

But, if the "powers that be" are going to demand wins...they better be prepared to step up to the plate themselves and do what it takes to help the coach out. Nobody's going to be able to come in and spin gold out of straw by themselves.

Like I said, it matters to a POINT. If you look at who won state titles in the last ten year, each school has a pretty good amount, excluding SV. Alot of Louisville schools (which they usually have quite a bit teams in the top 20) have tons of kids and tons of talent, but they can't get out of their own region and sometimes the district because only one team gets out alive.

 

Your last paragraph, I wish the admin would set higher expectations for our teams. For right now I think they need to get a district title to get over the hump.

My opinion of Coach Henley is very high to say the least, it's not absurd. In simple terms, Coach Henley probably has 5 or 6 kids walking the halls that has tons of talent but, he's never had a chance to see them play. I know there's no comparison but, GC has talented kids walking the halls that should be playing basketball too!

The athletic department at GC does a fantastic job trying to overcome exterior barriers and the AD and coaches of all sports should be congradulated for getting kids to work hard and overcome their own barriers.

that 2010 class was walking the halls. For some reason they seem to quit or transfer after their freshmen year....whats up with that?

 

I know 3 of the main players still go there. Why weren't they pursued to play???

Are you trying to tell me that Lawson who's 6'8" and 260, not to mention Prince, Pelfrey, and Struk wouldn't have helped out this year? 4 examples of what walks the halls every day and should have been on the basketball floor. This has nothing to do with the AD and Coaches either. We'll see within the next few days if the top brass wants a program that gets things accomplished!!!:sssh:

Don't forget Cameron Reynolds. He transferred to WV. Turned out to be a decent ball player and could of helped out but left on some unfortunate terms. I wish there was something that could of been done to keep him.

Exactly. Every school after a season is over had "great players" walking the halls. It generally doesn't have to do with a coach not wanting really good players to play. If you look back in the thread Holmes has had multiple state title teams walking the halls. They even won ONE b/c Henley was a good father figure. This stuff gets crazy at times.

I can assure you with the upmost confidence that the ones mentioned were pursued and pursued hard. I will say this in the defense of all sports at GCHS. Every coach there tries very hard to increase participation and does recruit the halls to get kids to come be apart of their programs. Just because they used to play, or are tall, big or athletic does not mean they have the heart, desire, or committment to be a contributing factor to any team. Many of these kids may play other sports or concentrate on one sport. Maybe they don't want to put in the time to be great, or maybe mom and dad don't want to fool with the aggrevation of practice times and off season time that high school takes. If you want to be good, you must have players that want to be there, and are willing to be apart of a TEAM; not just selfish babies that want to quit when they don't get their way or when they they are ask to work but they would rather hang out with girlfirends or friends that lure them away to do things that no one needs to be doing. Just my opinion but I can assure you that there are kids in the halls, but that does not mean they are a good fit for a particular team at GCHS.

If you have to pursue and beg kids to play, you are setting yourself up for disaster if you convince them.
