The ref on the baseline called a foul on Herndon as Popp was driving. However, the other ref called a fall on JJ as a result of the melee that was going on at the same time. The ref on the baseline made his call first, but I guess the other call stuck because that foul occured first, even though it wasn't called first. Several people around me were surprised that Popp didn't go to the free throw line.

 

The problem with the above is that it was the lead official who called a foul on JJ. He didn't call a foul on two different players.

I checked with someone who was at the scorer's table last night and there was not a foul on Herndon. The foul was on JJ when he pushed Brown.

 

This would be correct Clyde. Here is what happened. Brown and JJ were going at it hard as you know by now. After the elbow from Brown that knocked JJ back about 4 feet, he appealed to the officials for a call with an incredulous look on his face. When he realized that there was not going to be a foul called, he got very angry and went back after Brown, and then the foul was called. After the elbow, Brown was smiling as if to say I got away with one. This intensified things quickly. Was incredible to see Brown shooting free throws after what should have been an ejection IMO. If Cousins would have swung that elbow, Cal would have been in his grill so bad, his ear drums would have blown.

NKY basketball is a lot better than some of you are giving credit for. This is probably one of the best scouted areas in the state as far as coaching goes. Teams know one another like the back of their hand, which leads to close games.

 

Look at Holmes last year...close games throughout and didn't win any game in the region by more than 9, but when they got to the state tournament they dominated the first 3 rounds.

I think they let them play a little more down state then they do in the 9th region and don't call all the ticky tack fouls.

The 9th seems to have a reputation as being a low-scoring region as compared to others. If they "let them play" more logic would say that there would be more contact that wasn't called a foul. This would seem to benefit the defense yet the downstate teams score more than the teams in the 9th. It doesn't add up. More fouls equals more free throws which equals more points. "Ticky tack" fouls being called would lead to defenders backing off of the physical style which should equate to more scoring.

Boone County has been Holmes toughest opponent the last 2 yrs, but the region seems to be more balance in the 9th this year and these two may not reach the finals.

It wasn't always that way in the 9th. I think lower scoring has to do more with poor shooting, a direct result of implementing the 3 pt shot which I think has ruined high school basketball.

I do agree that NKY teams may focus a little more on defense. I also think the Holmes program over the years has had a lot to do with that. Coaches refuse to be drawn into an up and down game like they used to with Holmes. Over the last 20 years there have only been a few programs that could match up athletically with Holmes. The 6th, 7th and 11th regions have multiple teams that are athletically similar to the Holmes kids. most of these teams like to play an up and down game. I still say that the 3 pt shot and the offenses that coaches in the 9th prefer to run are geared around the 3 pt line. I also think that bad shooting plays a part in lower scoring games. Kids today are more interested in learning cool dunks than shooting FTs and learning to shoot jump shots. I also don't think that kids in the 9th region spend the same amount of time shooting that they do in areas where there isn't a lot of other things to do. Mountain teams have always been known to be good shooting teams because they spend a lot of their free time doing just that, shooting. The Elliott Co team of last year was a perfect example. Those kids were gym rats and it showed in their numbers.
