Tiger stated Holmes was a 'much better' team than Boone. I disagree with that statement and my point is that they just played to an OT game. The last 3 times these two teams have played the games could have gone either way.

 

I don't understand how the statement can be made that Holmes is a 'much better' team than Boone. How else would you compare the two teams? If you go head to head, it's a toss up, if you go common opponents it's a toss up.

I think you will find a lot of people who would support saying Holmes has so much talent and should be a 10-15pt winner against any 9th region team.

 

With that said, Holmes hasn't been showing its' dominance on a consistent basis and this is why they are winning a lot of close games.

 

If Holmes plays to their full potential then they will win the 9th region again and challenge for the state championship again.

The question is does Holmes' top three provide that much of a gap compared to Boones' top 7. In my opinion, that is where the 'toss up' comes in. I also think that with the style of offense that both teams run, keeps the games close and causes wins and losses to come down to possible missed shots at the end which could cause the games to go either way.

 

Hopefully, they do meet again in the regional final at the BoK Center, last year's game was a classic!!! Perhaps, this year though the layup goes in for the Rebels!!

The ref on the baseline called a foul on Herndon as Popp was driving. However, the other ref called a fall on JJ as a result of the melee that was going on at the same time. The ref on the baseline made his call first, but I guess the other call stuck because that foul occured first, even though it wasn't called first. Several people around me were surprised that Popp didn't go to the free throw line.

 

I think that Boone would have preferred for Popp to go to the line as well, he is a much higher % free throw shooter.

 

For anyone who knows Brown, they know that although he has a big bruiser body, he is as quiet and shut and play as you can get. Don't agree with the elbow, it was frustration at it's peak and, IMO, that is the ref's fault, they should have gotten a handle on the game with the physical post play earlier than that so that it wouldn't get there.

 

Both great teams, hope to see them play again, neutral court, new refs.

IMO If you don't show it, then you don't have it. Dominance is rarely used in High School sports, especially basketball because these are kids. There's a difference between good teams and dominant teams.

Holmes, IMO, is deeper than Boone.

 

Slusher v Popp: Slusher finished this game with 11 points, despite being in foul trouble much of the game. This match up isn't even close. Slusher is too big, strong, and athletic for Popp.

R. Johnson v Gabbard: Tough to assess this matchup since Boone sat back in a zone, but defensively Ricardo really took Mike out of what he wanted to do. He rarely was able to get to the rack and had to settle for jumpers. Ric finished with 23 points and 9 rebounds.

J. Johnson v Cotton- IMO, this is most even match up on the floor. Cotton got in foul trouble trying to defend JJ off the dribble though. Defensively, JJ's pressure made Cotton uncomfortable at times which kept the ball out of his hands. Both are explosive players athletically, but one on one, JJ gets the nod for all around game. I don't think Ronald is as polished as JJ with the rock.

Rice v Earls: Earls absolutely abused Kevon down low..plain and simple. Rice couldn't defend him and offensively was forcing shots. Earls is probably the smarter player of the two, in that he stayed down low and attacked Rice, while Rice was content with shooting jumpers over the zone, which led to him spending a lot of time on the pine.

 

Adv- Earls (Boone)

 

Pittman v Lay: This is a no contest. Lay was holding Pittman all night which led to him being in foul trouble and despite this, Pittman still poured in 14. Defensively, Pittman completely shut Lay down.

 

Adv- Pittman (Holmes)

 

Bench:

 

Avery, Hayes, Herndon v Montgomery/Brown: Montgomery/Brown get the nod but simply because their size down low made it tough for Hayes and Avery to contend with them. Avery was physical with Brown and forced a few bad shots by Trevan, but more often than not was called for a foul while trying to defend him. Montgomery had a decent game down low, but much of it can be attributed to Pittman being in foul trouble and not being as aggressive so he could stay on the floor.

 

Adv: Boone

 

The only two advantages I personally see Boone having is their bench play and Earls in the starting lineup. Other than that, Holmes gets the nod in every other category. Holmes has a little more depth than Boone as well, being able to play Mayfield and go 9 deep regardless of the competition. Boone, however, relies on their top 7 and that's it.

 

Should be fun to see if these two meet up again in the region to settle the debates once and for all. From what I hear though, this is just the start of things to come in this "rivalry." Both teams have some serious talent coming up the ranks.
