So you are saying to refuse a kid an education? Boy that would go over real well... I can't imagine the accusations that would come if Highlands refused enrollment to Mike Mitchell. I am not racist but can you imagine what would happen if a traditionally white community refused to allow a black student in the school that lived in the school district? Refusing enrollment to a student is ridiculous. Especially a public school. Why don't people look out for what is best for the kid?

 

As far as political distribution... Please tell me how well Ft. Thomas is represented. I agree that Ft. Thomas may have good political backing. You asked for a community that has more political representation that Ft. Thomas... Well find out about these communities and tell us. Your arguement is pointless unless you present facts. Even at that, that was the past, Mitchell is eligible and Highlands deserves their wins back.

I am refering to the original ruling where every presiding member ruled that he was ineligable. Not one descending member out of the group that was presiding. Obviously they weren't convinced of the bonified change of address.

 

You mean ruling #2, right? Wasn't he initially approved, then denied? Also, what makes the ruling you mention more correct than the final ruling?

I believe that they moved there, Mike is a good friend and i gave him a ride home from school or practice quite often. You keep presenting information without any FACTS.

True. You always have to put the kid first. Of course Highlands knew his eligibility would be investigated. They could have told him before the school year that if the KHSAA rules you ineligible, we will not play you. Then it is his family's decision from there. That would have taken an unlikely amount of foresight. And Highlands probably could not even have that discussion because then people would have accused Highlands of recruiting him.

I don't remember how well known he was after his junior year but it seems it would be very difficult to get a scholarship sitting out your senior year. After all, if he ended up at Ohio U. he apparently wasn't on the major programs' radars even after playing his senior year.

Still don't understand how renting an apt, when one's home was not put up for sale, nor was there even an attempt to try to sell the home, can be called a real move, unless the family knew in advance that they would be living in Ft. Thomas for a very short time. Oh and as far as moving for the illness/injury of Mrs. Mitchell, what, there were no apartments in Florence?

 

Understand the housing market in Florence was as strong as could be strong during that time period unlike today, where a home can sit on the market for months, upon months, upon months.

 

Just wondering

 

1) Did the Mitchells re-register to vote in Campbell or did they still vote in Boone? Should be a matter of public record!

 

2) Did the Mitchells change their drivers licenses to their new address in Campbell? Should be a matter of public record!

 

3) Did the Mitchells re-register all their autos to Campbell? Should be a matter of public record!

 

4) Did the Mitchells still claim the home in Florence as their prime residence for tax purposes?

 

Did they do all the above?

 

Again just wondering, but just how long did the Mitchells live in Ft. Thomas after their son left Highlands?

 

I honestly think if I were the KHSAA I would find out all the answers to questions 1-4...

 

BTW if Mitchells were out of Ft. Thomas within six months to a year after their son graduated from HHS, then to me at least, it doesn't pass the smell test!

These are definitely interesting questions to think about, but they have no bearing on the currrent situation, in my opinion. Clearly, the KHSAA felt (and maybe still feels ?) that Mitchell was ineligible. The judicial system ruled he was eligible. At this point, the only issue that really matters regarding Highlands' challenging of the KHSAA sanctions is whether Highlands' judicial support for allowing Mitchell to play football overrides the KHSAA's ruling that he was ineligible. I think this may be a constitutional/separation of powers issue, and not an issue of trying to definitively determine whether the Mitchell family's move was legitimate or not.

 

BTW, I for one am glad HHS is challenging the ruling. If the school system believes that HHS was treated unfairly by the KHSAA (and it seems they do, judging from the letter), then they ought to challenge it.

 

Records matter, and I would very much like to see HHS have 12 more wins listed on their W-L record if it turns out the KHSAA sanctions were unwarranted. Also, if I was a player on that team (or the parent of a player) it would really irritate me to have the 2004 season be recorded as a 2-13 season if I felt the forfeits were unwarranted. If they believe the sanctions were unwarranted, then the school system owes it to those kids (who worked their tails off that season to go 14-1 on the field) to challenge the ruling, even if it upsets the KHSAA.
