This thread is not an attempt to start another private vs public debate but am I the only who feels like it is the prinow vate school state tournament? I have been attending this event for years and I am aware that Shelby Valley won it 2 years straight on the boys side but I am increasingly disappointed by the number of teams who are eliminated by private schools ESPECISALLY those schools who have only one gender. Desales is a nice squad but has double the number of boys of any of the schools in the tourney. How is it no one seems to care? Is Holy Cross not a girls school? Many coaches and players are working their butt off every day hoping for one shot at a state tournament. Now , they are battling private school advantages as well as enrollment barriers? Am I the only one cares?

I was thinking the same thing as I watched the All A this year. I agree with your sentiments.

I may be wrong but aren't the single gender schools' enrollment doubled for the purposes of classing their sports teams. DeSales is 2A in football but really would be 1A based on their actual enrollment. Someone please correct me if I am wrong on this.

Others have pointed out the obvious flaws in your argument regarding HC and DeSales, but I'd say there are several other factors at work that would make it "appear" that the privates have advantages that simply don't exist. First, despite the constant references to the same handful of larger private schools in the public/private debate, the fact is most privates in the state are small, and the ratio of privates in the small school ranks is larger than in the entire state ratios. Secondly, the consolidation within many counties has eliminated many of the small public schools, many of which had decent athletic resumes.

 

I think if you look statewide, you'll find the small public, and particularly the small "city" schools to be very competitive in a wide range of sports!! By my count 10 of the 16 finalists were publics and a couple of regions have few options but a private champion? The 9th region which is a particular hotbed of small school privates (primarily Catholic) with outstanding athletic backgrounds even sent their first public representative to Richmond. I really don't understand your argument??

 

Regarding enrollments, per Mustang's comment, the tourney is comprised of the smallest 125 schools, and we all realize that this includes the 2A football schools. I noticed some serious mistakes in the program this year regarding enrollments, with one school (one with an "A" Championship to their credit) listed with 200 more students than actually at the school--Not sure where the figures came from, but hopefully it was accidental, not intended to misrepresent??

 

Let's leave this tourney alone!! A champion was crowned from 16 regional winners, and 125 participants, playing 4 games in 4 days (sound familiar?); how's that compare to ANY of the 6 football "State Champions"?? Congrats again to Shelby Valley!! :confused:

What i don't understand about the ALL A is how they don't evenly break up the regions for their schools. Some regions might have 7 or 8 A schools and it take 3 games to win their region, while other regions only have 4 or 5 teams and only have to win 2 games. Correct me if i am wrong, but isn't this considered an invitational to the smallest 125 schools in the state? If so, why not split the schools up evenly throughout the 16 regions?

If you are going by numbers online, for football classification purposes being a single gender school DeSales has their enrollment numbers doubled. Is that the source of the confusion?

I do not know many people out there assossiated with schools classified in the All "A" that dislike the tournament. It is a special tournament that many people get to enjoy every year. It something to shoot for as a smaller school. DeSales had a good year this year. As far as their elligability, idk, but I have not heard their name associated with the All A state tournament in years. Was this their first year of elligabilty?
