I had to do some digging to find it but the enrollment at DeSales is 284, 9-12.

 

Your enrollment qualification for the All "A" is based on your 10-12 enrollment.

But in the All A programs they list enrollments for 9-12, not 10-12. Our enrollment at Owsley County is 243, 9-12, and that's what they had in the program.

To expand upon this, when the tournament started in Northern Ky back in the day, most of the smaller high schools were only 10-12, with freshman still with the middle schools. At least, that's the way I always understood it.

 

 

Fascinating, that is definitely a foreign concept to me. Of course the concept of a middle school is as well but I at least am familiar with it.

If that is the legitimate enrollment, then I see no cause for debate. However, every enrollment number I saw on the school in my limited research had it listed as over 500 students.

That's because schools that are all male and all female have their enrollment doubled for classification. DeSales does not have 500+ students, they have 284 boys in their school and 0 girls. So the KHSAA doubles the 284 count to get a number for their football classification.

Given the weak offerings from the Louisville regions historically in the All A, I can't imagine this wasn't their first year eligible. DeSales has had some teams in recent years that were much better than what came out of their All A region.

DeSales was only eligible in the last two or three years, but they couldn't get by Shawnee, which had pretty good teams, too.

Most of the basketball state titles go to the larger schools and there is a mythical all A state championship. Yea, we're number 88! How is this even a debate?

The All A Classic isn't affiliated with the KHSAA ... the organization runs its own tournament, so don't be surprised if they stay in business.

Are the coaches KHSAA coaches? Yes

If a kid gets hurt, does it go on the KHSAA insurance? Yes

Does the KHSAA recognize the title? No

Do other teams in those regions have to schedule around that tournament and adjust schedules as necessary? Yes

The issue isn't what the KHSAA does or doesn't do, it is about a mythical title. These schools put banners up along with the standard regional or district titles so whether the KHSAA does or does not recognize it isn't the issue.

If all schools in the state were divided into divisions as is the case in Northern Kentucky with the NKAC Conference, and if the powers that be had their way, the "ALL "A"" would be an All Division III tournament.

 

When it was created back in 1980 it was done so to showcase the small schools, who because of their size and disadvantage to the larger schools of the region, never had a chance to showcase their talent on a grand stage.

 

It was created for the Daytons, Ludlows, Bellevues, Beechwoods, and Silver Groves of the state. Unfortunately, in order to get depth into their tournament, they had to raise the enrollments, and therefore their tournament became an All Division II Tournament, and the Division IIIs of the state were back in the same boat that they were in before the "A" was created.

 

Since it turned out to be a popular event, was well sponsored up, and seemed to generate crowds and interest they have left it exist as it presently exisits.

The LIT, KOB and Repbulic Bank Tournament that's in Lexington are all tournaments as well that meet the above criteria that you laid out. Are you upset by them as well?
