Title IX - lets talk about it.

Featured Replies

I firmly believe girls sports should be treated with respect but I think Title IX needs revamped.

It's causing a financial burden on the schools. Players can't even travel together on a bus to the game (Boone County Schools). The pendulum has swung way to far and needs to be adjusted IMO.

Title IX has been great for girls athletics, However I agree that it needs to be revamped. It is almost impossible to keep budgets, spending, and scheduling in order to meet all requirements.

My biggest problem is scheduling, and donations/fund-raising.

I say we go back to the traditional schedule.

It also tick me off that someone cannot donate to a boys team without an equal donation to the girls.

I'm also tired of fund-raising, and being told we have to give $$$$$ to a girls program.......

Agreed. Was in Miami several years ago, and was told about a school that had to TEAR DOWN a state of the art baseball complex (that was built by private funds), because there was no way the school could afford to duplicate the funds to the girls' programs. So, it's gotten to the point where, if you can't "reward" the girls....you have to "punish" the boys, to try and make things equal. That's not right in my book.

Here's how far this thing dials down. Was attending a girls bball banquet. Noticed the cheerleaders in attendance. Commented to a coach, "I don't remember the cheerleaders being here last year". The response, "they were at the boys banquet last year. They have to alternate because of Title IX". I was like, "you've got to be kidding".

I'm not sure where your information has come from, but the funds that are raised by boosters do not have to be shared, nor does a donor have to make a equal donation either boys or girls, or at least it has not been shared in our system. What I do know is this, that for every dollar spent on boys, has to be spent on girls. I'm not sure what the problem with that is. I think that is fair.

You haven't been sued yet then.........

Private funds are included in the bold, read a couple of threads above..........

I'm going to go with the "if you don't have something good to say don't say anything at all".

For those of us who lived the pre-title IX, I have to say IMO that title IX is the greatest thing to have helped our girls get equality in the sports world. If it inconviences the boys on occasion, that is a small price to pay for the big picture. If the boys are denied something, it cannot be anything close to what the girls were previously denied.

Is title IX perfect? I have to agree that it is not, but I am not sure how to fairly make changes.

No we haven't been sued yet. It's (Title IX) not a perfect system, but what we had before was far from perfect! Spend it all on the boys, and give a token amount to the girls was not fair either!

Like most things in politics and education, what started as a good idea has been implemented in a way that is ineffective and lacks common sense.

To Paraphrase " what's good for the gander is good for the goose " Its obvious some of you have never had daughters play H.S. sports . Title IX is the best thing for girls sports to come down the pike !!

I had a friend who coaches at a place where Title 9 sent the "big dogs" in to measure compliance.

My friend had to REMOVE his own personal mini-fridge from his coaches office because the girls coach didn't have one in his office.

They measured the sinks to make sure they were the same diameter, depth and height off the ground.

------------------------------

The girls I've talked with HATE when they play second because it's no fun to watch a large part of the crowd file out while you warm up.

Good idea - but in my opinion, bad execution of the idea.
